My grandfather was a hardworking, stubborn man who loved his family unconditionally and would do anything for them. One of the earliest memories I have of my grandfather was when I was riding my pony Sassy and I was learning how to make her run. I kicked her hard and she took off and my grandfather was on his horse. I couldn't make her stop and then only thing that saved me from running into him was a sharp corner that he turned and I went straight into the field. Then when I would make my horse Baby run, his horse Cheyenne would run with me without my grandfather telling her to do it and it would crack him up everytime. Which of course made me do it over and over again. When my mom moved away and I had to fly across the country for the summer my grandfather always told me how much he loved me and that he wanted me to be safe. I would always say goodbye the day i left and went to see him the day i returned and it would always bring tears to his eyes. I always feel connected to my grandfather everytime I ride my horse. I'm going to miss you Poppaw. I love you

I have so many memories of my Pop from working on Burnups Farm, fixing fences, garden work, to riding horses amd even having to get up in the middle of the night to catch some cows that had escaped. I had the greatest privilege of working with Pop at RRS. Pop worked extremely hard to make sure his family had everything they needed and sometimes more. Pop loved to break horses, even when they tried to break him. They would kick, rare, and buck him off but he would always get back on his feet, brush the dirt off and jump back on. The horse always lost. When I graduated from high school, I started working and got into racing cars. My sister Cheryl became pregnant with Cara and she asked me to ride her horses until Cara was born. Pop had a filly named Sue who was a real handful. Instead of someone else breaking her I told Pop I would break her so he could sell her. After breaking Sue, Pop gave her to me and I got back into riding full time. I absolutely loved riding in the parks, camping at the League of Maryland Horsemen and sitting around the camp fire with Pop, friends and family. Today I see the love of riding that Pop had in my daughter Ashley and it makes me happy everytime we ride. Toward the end we would help Pop on and off of Cheyenne. I wI'll never forget the last ride Pop and I had together. Pop also loved going to the auction. He would sit and talk to people the entire time. He never met someone he didn't like and everyone he met called him "Pop" or "Friend". Until we meet again, happy trails Pop. I love you Pop.

 He was "Uncle Howard" to me. All of my life, he was there for me and my family (like a second father). For two brothers married two sisters and a special bond was formed between our families. We shared a closeness like no other. I hold a lot of memories in my heart, and one especially- He always hugged me and told me "I was very special to him". Sadly missed... But will never be forgotten!

"Pop has been such a special friend for over 30 years, it is difficult to sum up all of my memories of him in just a few lines. He would always welcome me as one of his own with a smile, a hug and unconditional love that extended right to my husband from the minute they met. I will never forget our talks we would have ranging from horses to tomatoes. I even  pretended to like wrestling only because I loved how excited he always would get when telling the story. Our hearts are sad that he is no longer with us but heaven is lucky to have a great new angel to smile down on us. Pop will always have a special place in our hearts."

Poppaw,

  As hard as this is for me to write, I can honestly say I never thought I would be! There was a time that you told me that no matter what you'll always be here for me, I just never thought that would mean in spirit only  When you were in the hospital before you past you made me promise to always take care of mommy bcuz she's who you worried about the most and that promise I do plan to keep... You always made a point of telling me how precious McKenna was and how proud you were of me and the mom I became! Pop our family gatherings specifically our Christmas 1 will NEVER be the same and I think for a while to come they're gonna be filled with a lot of sadness but we will always remember the good times we got to share with you, you've taught every one of your grandchildren and your great grandchildren so much! Whenever I see a horse you'll always be my first thought! Pop Kenna & I miss you so much and we love you even more! Fly high our handsome loving angel and until we meet again keep a close eye on everyone and protect our every move

My father was my riding buddy, he was one of my best friends. He was an honest, easy going and laid back person. He was a simple man and liked simple things. I could tell him anything and he wouldn't judge me. He was the kindest, gentlest and most loving person. He was a friend to everyone he met. It didn't matter who you were or what you looked like. He would talk to everyone. We couldn't go anywhere that he didn't run into someone he knew.

Pop was very loving and affectionate. He always gave a hug and said I love you. Although this father/daughter bond will never be broken, I am sad that I will never feel his strong arms hugging me or hear him say I love you ever again. We promised to always take care of each other and I know he will keep his promise as I kept mine.

My Dad was a strong and determined man. He did everything the hard way. He was old school and a very hard worker. He was as stubborn as the day is long. Once he made up his mind there was no changing it so you might as well hanker down and do it his way.

Dad loved his horses. He had them his entire life and enjoyed breaking and riding them. He loved camping up at the League and spending time with family and friends.

Pop also loved Diesel and Mattie, our Border Collies. He treated them like his own. He loved feeding them cheese curls every day. We always knew when he fed them because they would come back upstairs with cheese crumbs on top of their heads where he patted them.

Pop always wanted to live on a farm. I am so glad for the last 20 years of his life that he was able to retire on the farm and do whatever he wanted when he wanted. Pop lived with no regrets!

Dad was a devoted husband, terrific father, wonderful grandfather and great grandfather and loving friend. I will cherish the times we shared and the memories we made forever.

We are so lucky to have had such a great man in our lives. It warms my heart to know that he touched so many lives. I am proud to be his daughter.

I miss and think of you everyday dad. Love you Pop!

Pop was not only my grandfather but one of my best friends. On his last day I asked him if he needed anything and he said he would always need, love, and be there for me. With his passing these words mean more to me than anything. Knowing the importance we had in each other's lives brings me great joy along with sadness. I would not trade the 20 years I got to spend with him for anything. I have countless precious memories from riding horses, camping, and just everyday life I will cherish forever. He would always brag about his little nurse to everyone he met, and how he appreciated the time and care I gave to him. He will always be my first and favorite patient. Save me a trail ride up there in heaven. Till we meet again, I love you to the moon and back old man.

I never thought my heart could be so full of happiness and broken at the same time. Life brings you unbridled joy and devastating sorrow, sometimes one right after another. Not even two weeks after welcoming a baby girl into our family I had to say goodbye to my loving Poppaw. 
Poppaw was my moral guide, a role model, and the sweetest man I've ever known. Staying strong until the end, he was at peace with what was next for him. He believed there was an order to things and he knew it was his time. 
I have so many memories with Poppaw. Countless days at the farm with the horses, starting at a very young age he shared his saddle with me for a trail ride, usually ending in a nice nap for me. Riding in his truck while listening to his bluegrass cassette tapes and my most fond memory would be celebrating our birthdays together. We would always switch our ages and he would joke about how good I looked for my age. 
As I grew older and started my own family he never missed an opportunity to tell me I was a good mom, how well I was raising my "youngins" and how precious they were to him. 
Even though, physically he's no longer here with me, we shared a love that comforts me and keeps my head up on hard days. I'll always miss him like crazy and for a long time to come there will be that "something is missing" feeling when we gather as a family. I'll keep all of my memories close to my heart along with what was most important to him...always work hard, keep family close, and love unconditionally. 
Until we take a trail ride together again, I love you and I'll miss you!

I've known Pop for 13 years now but I feel like I've known him all my life. Everytime I'd go in the basement he'd say "shorty come over here" and he'd give me a hug and a kiss. Some of my favorite memories with Pop are riding the trails. We'd laugh and say "Pop you leaning back enough?" He looked like he was gonna fall off the back because he'd lean back so far. Or he'd never tighten his saddle enough so he'd be leaning back and to one side. I know he's riding the trails in heaven and cowboying it up. Thank you for loving me like one of your own. Save me a dance old man, I love you.

I got to know Mr. Howard by his son Roger being my son's best friend. He was always happy to see you. Always a hug and a kiss for you when you did see him. He did love his family with all his heart. He will be missed, but the memories they have of him they will have forever.

Howard you were one of the nicest people I have known.  I always knew I would get a smile and hug whenever I saw you.  The love and kindness you had for family, friends and animals will always be remembered.  I smile now remembering you.  Donna Chadwell

I don't have one single memory, but instead a totality of them that summarize you as one of the kindest people I have ever known. Never once did I ever feel left out or less than family whenever you were around - you were everyone's Pop! Although we were always made to feel like family, your relationship with your real family was something to be admired - you were all so close, always had each other's back, definitely an example for all of us.

I met back up with Pop in 2012 after 13 years of being away, and the first thing he said to me was "was it hot over there?" lol. Instead of tears, he put a smile on my face. Pop, I know you're standing on a beautiful field with beautiful horses looking upon us.....

I feel so lucky to have had you as my grandfather. You were the cutest, sweetest man I have ever met. I'm going to miss how you would always tell me I was the first grandchild and how much you loved me everytime I said goodbye to you. You loved your family more than words could describe and just know how much that loved is returned. You will truly be missed and always loved and thought of more than you know. I will also never forget when me and Lisa would ride to the farm with you and you would tell us to hold on tight as u hit the gas and flew over those hills until we laughed so hard! I love you so much and will always think of you. Get on that horse up there and enjoy yourself. Xoxoxo

Whenever I would see Howard out in the field tending to the horses or taking care of some chores we would exchange a nod or a wave, every time we did stop and chat I enjoyed talking with him. He was the kind of neighbor who would say "if you need anything just holler" and I knew he meant it. We never had a conversation without talking about his family, his smile would say it all, he loved his family, that was obvious. I know for them this is difficult but they have the blessing of all the memories they had the chance to make. I am greatful I had a chance to spend some time with him too.

Not like everybody else I only had a short time to know pop, but in that short time I felt like it also counted for the 12 years that I didn't get to spent with him. Pop and I are always working on his garden, working with pop sometime is not very easy, but at the end of the day it makes him happy. Every time I see or say goodbye he always tell me that I'm his boy and he love me so much. Pop I know that you loved me with all your heart and I will always love you with all my heart till we meet again. You will be missed and I love you so much pop.

I married into the family 35 years ago. I'll never forget the way his face would light up every time he talked about his family who he loved more than anything! Every time he would hug me good bye he'd wisper in my ear "you know I love you with all my  heart"!  I've never met a more gentle and loving person. You will be missed more then you'll ever know! ...and Mr Howard " I love you with all my heart"" too!

Ronalds and my life have been so Blessed and Enriched by the presence of our Friend  Pop in our lives,,so many Memories ,and so thankful for each one of them,,Ronald laughs as we are looking back at the times we catch him and Pop sitting in their chairs after a long ride,Napping,not one time but many times,,remembering the last year Pop and his Peacos rode the trails together,and seeing the Love he had for this horse ,and how hard it was to say goodby to that chapter of his life ,,but so exciting to watch his Patiece and Gentleness in his Training and working his new trail horse Cheyeene ,riding beside him listening to him talk to her in a gentle voice as all the other riders take off running,she always listened,,afterwards going out with the Family for dinner ,and knowing that if he ordered a sub,Yep there would be a extra order for more Mayo...Thank You Pop for the Love we always felt when we were with you,and Always making us feel at home and like Family,,there will always be a place in our Hearts that have your name on it,and Memories that will comfort us until we are Riding those trails in Heaven together..we Love you Pop Always...

Grandpa words can't describe the pain but when I think back to you and memaw lived on Calhoun and u had that farm u gave me like 4 baby chick and hey started jumping out the car and u said hold onto them hillbilly things u will be truly missed I love u so much poppaw
