With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to John Calvin Hurd, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, and pillar of our community. John's journey came to an end on May 8, 2024, leaving behind cherished memories and a legacy of warmth, kindness, and passion.
Born in 1939 in Winchester, Virginia, John's adventurous spirit was evident from an early age. He found solace and joy in the serene waters, where his love for fishing blossomed. Whether casting his line at dawn or dusk, he found peace and fulfillment in the rhythmic dance between man and nature.
John's dedication extended beyond his leisure pursuits; it was ingrained in every aspect of his life. As an esteemed member of the H&S Bakery family, his dedication and work ethic were unmatched. Colleagues admired his reliability, integrity, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
Among his many passions, John had a fascination with trains that spanned a lifetime. The allure of locomotives, the rhythmic clack of wheels on tracks, stirred his soul and fueled his imagination. He found joy in studying their mechanics, history, and intricacies, a hobby that brought him boundless joy and wonder.
In the world of rodeo, John found a thrilling escape—a realm of adrenaline, skill, and bravery. His admiration for the rodeo's grit and determination mirrored his own indomitable spirit. He cheered on riders with fervor, finding inspiration in their courage and resilience.
Red roses held a special place in John's heart, symbolizing love, passion, and beauty. He delighted in their vibrant hues, their delicate petals, finding solace and joy in their timeless elegance.
A true handyman at heart, John possessed an innate talent for fixing anything and everything. From leaky faucets to broken fences, his skills knew no bounds. He approached each task with patience, precision, and a smile, earning the admiration and gratitude of all who sought his help.
John's dedication to his country was unwavering. As an army veteran, he served with honor, courage, and distinction. His sacrifice and selflessness were a testament to his character, a beacon of hope and inspiration to all who knew him.
Faith played a central role in John's life, as a devoted member of the Church of God in Conway, SC. He found comfort and strength in his spirituality, guiding him through life's triumphs and trials with grace and humility.
John's culinary philosophy was simple yet steadfast: "If he couldn't microwave it, he wouldn't eat it." His love for hearty, homemade meals was surpassed only by his love for sharing them with family and friends.
There was an undeniable bond between John and his cherished dog, Tiffany. Their connection went beyond mere companionship; it was a testament to the profound love John held for his furry friend. From the moment Tiffany entered his life, she nestled her way into his heart, becoming more than just a pet—she was family. John's affection for dogs, in general, was palpable, but it was with Tiffany that his devotion truly shined. Whether it was the joyful wag of her tail or the warmth of her presence by his side, Tiffany brought a sense of joy and fulfillment that words could scarcely capture. For John, Tiffany wasn't just a dog; she was an embodiment of love, loyalty, and unwavering companionship, enriching his life in ways he never thought possible.
Though John's earthly journey has come to an end, his spirit lives on in the countless lives he touched and the memories he created. His legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will forever be etched in our hearts.
