Kathy Marie Boyer-Shick

Dr. Kathy Marie Boyer-Shick, age 61, of Elkridge, Maryland passed away on Saturday, October 2, 2021. Kathy was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on January 31, 1960 to parents William and Mary Ann Boyer. Kathy was the beloved wife of Charles Shick, Jr. and the cherished mother of Charles “Chas” Shick, III and his wife Dr. Mary Laura Shick; loving grandmother of Charles “Charlie” Shick, IV and dear sister of Lynne Griffin and her husband Nick; Kathy is also survived by 9 nieces and nephews, four grand nephews and two grandnieces.

Kathy devoted her time, talent and career to the education of children. Kathy received her B.A. in Psychology in 1981, her M.Ed. in Special Education in 1987, and her Ph.D. in Special Education in 1996 at the University of Maryland at College Park. Kathy completed her Fellowship at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine from 1994-1996. During her career, Kathy was an Educational Evaluator at Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, a Special Education Resource Teacher in Baltimore, a Special Education Consultant and a Mental Health Consultant for Baltimore City Head Start. In her spare time, Kathy also was a substitute teacher for the Howard County Public School System. In 2009, Kathy started her own private practice which included Executive Functioning Coaching, Cognitive Strategy Instruction, Tutoring and Advocacy Services. She provided Psycho-Educational, Developmental Assessments and Functional Behavioral Analysis. Kathy was a member of the Kappa Delta Pi, National Honorary Society in Education Psi Chi, and National Honorary Society in Psychology Who’s Who in American Education. Kathy volunteered at Paws for Comfort, Howard County Department of Aging and Independence, was a board member for the Citizen’s Review Board for Children and trained her dog Tank to be a therapy dog and they volunteered at Lorien Elkridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Kathy was also a proud author of the book, “Tank Tales, A Nursing Home Visit”, a children's guide to nursing homes and dementia.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, 5976 Old Washington Road, Elkridge, Maryland 21075 on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, her family wishes donations to be made to your favorite children's charity.
