Possibly as a result of her difficult childhood, Mom was shy and reserved. But she was also one of the most courageous and determined, yet caring and selfless people you could ever want to meet. Mom lost her first husband, Pat in 1973, when she was only 31 years old. She signed the contract on a house even though she had lost Daddy and had no idea how she was going to manage the payments and responsibility of a home with three young daughters and only a part time job. Family and faith always came first in her life. We girls never realized the depth of her heartbreak and struggles. Our home was always a happy, welcoming place with many pets, family members in need and Mom had even “adopted” quite a few of our friends. Birthdays and holidays were always special. Mom’s favorite holiday was Thanksgiving and we always celebrated as a family. Some of our favorite memories are the family and slumber parties, playing in the pool in the back yard, outings to the skating rink and trips to Hershey Park and Ocean City.
Many do not realize how intelligent Mom was. Although she only made it to 9th grade, she went back to night school and got her GED. She always helped us girls with our homework, even getting books to learn our curriculum herself. Some of her favorite pastimes were playing scrabble and doing word and crossword puzzles. Mom also was a fantastic writer, but she reserved her talent for writing silly ditties and poems for the family. She also had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh. The grandchildren and great grandchildren added a wonderful new dimension of fun, love and joy to our family.
Mom waited until we were much older before she would even consider dating, as always, sacrificing her happiness for ours. Thank God she finally gave up on that, because that is when she met Pop. He was just what the doctor ordered to make our family complete. He has taken us girls into his heart as his own and we were happy to reciprocate. He and Mom had such a special relationship. Pop brought her the happiness that she had put off for herself for so long. Her and Pop truly were “bestest friends.” Their relationship was one to envy. From holding hands in church and when they took their walks together to their silly little pranks and antics, they had something unique and special. Pop, you may have lost the physical Marian, but rest assured, she is still with you and you are stuck with us for life!
Mom, your life was so full of faith, love and laughter. You overcame so many struggles and challenges and you ALWAYS put God and your family first. We will miss you so much, but we know that you were tired and ready for this rest. You have touched countless lives, especially ours. We will now carry the torch for you and we promise to take care of Pop and always put family first. Rest in peace, Mom. We love you and will miss you terribly, but we will be all right because of you.
Love, Connie, Laura and Susan (and Wayne)
