Roland Vinson Van Dyke

Roland is survived by his Devoted Wife of 71 years, Evelyn; Beloved Children Gregory (Shelley) Van Dyke and Beverly Van Dyke; Cherished Grandchildren Lindsey (Bill) Benjes and Erin Van Dyke (Arick Loeschke); Dear Niece Charlotte (Richard) Lindsay and Family.

A proud Navy veteran, Roland served during the Korean War on the USS Monterey. He had a passion for bowling, camping, playing cards and hunting, and was an esteemed member of the Sportsman Club and Igloo Hunting Club. Roland also dedicated many years of service, and retired as a telephone man with AT&T.

Roland was a man of faith. He was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church, where he shared his love for music by singing in the church choir. Roland was also a part of the VIM team, participating in mission trips that positively impacted many communities.

In addition to his military and professional achievements, Roland was a dedicated family man. He served as a Boy Scout Assistant Scout Master of Troop 636 and ran the Explorer Post. His commitment to scouting earned him the affectionate nickname “Turk” after wearing a hat with a feather during a memorable scouting event. The name stuck, and many now fondly remember him by this endearing moniker. His family now even calls him “PapaTurk”. He also was active and assisted Greg with both the Liquor Store and Sundance Boat Sales. His crowning achievement was all the care and dedication he gave to taking care of his daughter Beverly who is disabled and making sure she lived a great life.

Roland will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his service to his country, and his compassionate involvement in his church and community.

A Visitation for Roland will be held Thursday, January 18, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home, 7250 Washington Blvd, Elkridge, MD 21075. A Funeral Service will occur Sunday, January 21, 2024 at 11:30 AM. Interment Meadowridge Memorial Park.
