

John R. “Buck” Matthews Jr, a retired cement dispatcher passed away in Ellensburg at Kittitas Valley Hospital on April 15, 2015. Buck was born in Yakima, WA on Aug 23, 1930, and was raised in Harrah, WA. He attended High school in Thorp, and LH Bates Vocational school. He married Mary Hutchinson in 1959 in Thorp, WA.
Buck served in the US Navy as Boatswains’ Mate 3rd class from 1948-1952. He joined son Steve on the USS Enterprise from Hawaii to NAS Alameda CA in 1986. Buck worked construction on Snoqualmie pass and for Don Akins Co from 1959-1964. He also worked for O.K. Rubber Welders and Lovering Tire Co. He started work with Ellensburg Cement in 1966, and he retired in 1995. After retiring, he helped Clarence Harrell & Sons tedding & baling hay.
Buck served as a director on the Damman school board from 1974-1997, and as an open division sheep superintendent at the county fair with Clarence Harrell for 30+ years. He and Mary have volunteered at the FISH Food bank for several years, and he has been a member of Thorp Community Church from 1980 to present.
Buck enjoyed fishing, woodworking, reading books, telling jokes & sharing email jokes from friends and family. The best times were spent with family- especially cider making, and he was always ready to help his wife, kids, grandkids and friends with anything they needed. He always had a spare piece of candy to share- The Candy man.
He is survived by his wife, Mary (Hutchinson) Matthews; Daughter Marie (Kirk) Riegel of Ellensburg; Son Jack (Marcy) Matthews of Thorp; Daughter Sandy (Mel) Goudge of Ellensburg; Son Steve (Dana) Matthews of Ellensburg; Son Tim (Wendy) Matthews of Ellensburg; Daughter Lori (Jeff) St. John of Ellensburg. He loved his Grandchildren: Kristine Riegel, Tyler & Travis Matthews, Josh (Jen) Goudge, Austin (Jasmine) Lewis, Brent (Annie) Lewis, Jeremy (Anna) Lewis & Hayden Lewis, Mackenzie Matthews, Kayla, Kyle & Clayton Matthews, Tabitha (Dan) Sears, Derek (Adrianna) St. John & Nick St. John and 12 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Edna Matthews, Brothers & Sisters, Wallace, Betty, Dolores, Norman & Andrea.
A Memorial Service will take place Friday at 2pm April 24 2015 at Thorp Community Church, following a private family burial.
