Where do I begin to express all that my father has meant to me and my family? When I have a hard day at work and feel I can't get it together, all I have to do is think of Papi and Mami and what they sacrificed by leaving Cuba without a dime with 3 daughters and figuring out how to start a new life in Michigan. As if that was not enough, he managed through the help of my uncle to arrange for my older sisters to go to a Catholic boarding school since he knew education and faith were more important than anything. My dad made a modest salary but I grew up privileged going to a Catholic school and always having everything I needed in life. I wasn't always thankful growing up at the strict parenting but as I grow older I appreciate that it was done to protect and guide me to a good life. Thank you for being such an unbelievable dad, father in law and grandparent. I will be forever grateful.

Papi was a major influence on our families lives.  In the early '60s, he endured great hardship to bring his 3 daughters from Cuba to America to lead a better life with just the shirt on his back.  He is proof positive that immigration is part of what makes America great.  When his Pharmacy degree from University of Havana wasn't recognized in the U.S., he and Mami worked lesser jobs to provide for the girls, though they eventually moved up at Henry Ford in the medical labs.

Eventually he was able to get that home in the suburbs (for about what we buy a car for these days) and instilled the values of education and self-support in all of his daughters.  Lucky for me, the youngest went to Wayne State, where we met and fell in love, which is when Carlos entered my life.

Dinners and family outings with the Ruiz family were always fun.  We constantly heard the tales of the paradise that was Cuba, and tried hard to avoid the touchy topics like politics and religion.  But I instantly felt a member of the family.  Papi helped with our down payment on our first home, and was generous in the time he let us take to re-pay them.

When the kids came, Mami y Papi were as much a part of their lives as we were.  They cared for them and feed them after school, and every day Zoila would come home with a home-cooked Cuban meal.  I'm still working off the rice, beans and plantains to this day!

Whenever Papi came to visit, I'd offer a drink - Baracoa Libre (vodka & coke) and he'd ask "Is it the same price?"  And it was...free for the price of his company.

When we moved to California and then they moved to Florida, we didn't see each other as much.  But he was always in our thoughts and seeing Papi was always a highlight of our trips to Florida.  And the drinks were still the same price.

I owe you Papi.  For raising a smart, lving and caring daughter.  For helping us raise a great family.  For the smiles and joy you brought all of us.  When you get to Heaven, be sure to ask if the drinks are "the same price."  I'm, sure they are, at least for you.

I consider myself a lucky person for having a "Double" bond with Abuelito. Not only was I his first grandson, but I also had the honor to have him as my Godfather. There are so many memories...he took me to my first ever baseball game to watch the Detroit Tigers & bought me my first Tigers baseball cap, spent multiple summer vacations on the beach together & a trip to Niagra Falls, just to name a few. He taught me how to mow the lawn and about the importance of discipline and being responsible. 

His famous phrases will never be forgotten.  For example, "If you don't like it, I will give you your money back."

Although he will be deeply missed, I know in my heart that we will now have another angel watching over us. 

I love you very much Abuelito! May you Rest in Eternal Peace.

One of the sweetest men I have met in a long time. The love he had for Flora and his family was shown daily in his smile and when he spoke. I will miss him greatly. My thoughts are with you at this time.

There are so many things I can say about Tío Manolín, so many memories of beautiful Christmas Eve's in Detroit, first, and then in Miami, in Tampa and in Orlando where he would nicely ask about my life choices. I am so thankful for everything he did for my and my family throughout the years. Today, I wonder what my life would be like if he had not made it possible for me to attend the Academy of the Sacred Heart. I don't think I ever thanked him. Thank you, tío, for everything you did for all of us! We are who we are in no small part because of you.

Abuelito taught me the true essence of manhood. The idea that you can create a better life for yourself and your family through hard work and perseverance. His grit and determination opened countless doors of opportunity for his daughters, my generation, and the next generation to come. We all have a better life because of him. We are all better people for knowing him. I can't think of many people I know that I aspire to be like more than Abuelito. Funerals are naturally tragic... however I think we should take a moment to realize there is nothing tragic about Abuelito's passing. He lived a long and accomplished life. He got to see his family grow into generations most people don't get to see. I can say confidently Abuelito passed happily, knowing his sacrifices made all of our lives better.

Abuelito and Abuelita took a very active role in raising me. Every day after school at St. Joan of Arc, I would walk over to their house and be treated like a king. Abuelita would have a 5 course meal prepared for me and I would watch the Tigers lose with Abuelito. Now that I live on my own and have to cook for myself I never realized how good I had it. Abuelita and Abuelito spoiled me every day of my childhood. Not only with food, but with love. I owe them my entire life, and the only way I feel like I can pay them back is to share the love that they gave me with others. Be grateful. Don't complain. Sacrifice for others.
