My Dear Charles,
It's been three years since you have gone.  I stopped by your grave today. I played Kenny Rogers, Goodbye, song for you. Remember the first time we heard this song, standing in your kitchen after work and preparing dinner with you. Such a great but sad song.  I also played Elvis song, Please Don't Stop Loving Me. These are some of our favorites.  I will never stop loving you or missing you.

I will always remember not just that you died but that you lived and that your life gave me memories too beautiful to forget.

Charles, Loving you was easy, Missing you is hard, Been a year since you've gone, Seems like only yesterday, Trying not to ponder on my loosing you, But rather that I had you to love. I cherish every moment we spent together. You gave me so many happy moments, Always and forever you will remain in my heart. RIP Charles Alfred Roy, you were one of a kind. God broke the mold when he designed you. I always told you that. I Love you forever.

                                  Memories of my Cousin Charlie Roy

	Charlie was the closest thing to a big brother I ever had. He was 8 years older than I. He played a major role in my formative years. Charlie had a lot to do with me living at Yorktown Manor in North Kingstown, R.I. Charlie’s parents Napoleon (Poly) and Bwenzy Roy and my parents Eugene (Gene) and Ruth Roy used to live in trailers and spend summers in R.I. and winters in Florida. When Charlies reached school age the school systems told Bwenzy and Poly that they would have to choose a state and settle down. Charlie could not spend half the school year in Florida and the other half in R.I. My Uncle Leo Roy told his brothers that 30 duplexes in N. Kingstown were up for sale and offered good prospects as rentals to Navy personnel at Quonset Point Naval Air Station.  So Poly, Gene, Joe Santos and Francis O’Neill put their money together, formed a corporation, Yorktown Manor Inc., and bought Yorktown Manor. Poly and Gene’s “gypsy” days were over. Poly built a house in Warwick, R.I. where they grew up and Gene, Ruth and I (at 18 months old at the time) moved into one of the Yorktown apartments where Ruth ran the rental office.	
	It took a lot of work to keep 60 rental apartments in good shape. So Charlie and Joe’s son, Jim (Moosey) were paid to come just about every Saturday to take care of the renters’ complaints like fixing leaky faucets and squeaky back porch steps. Poly and Gene trained them about how to fix things. Charlie and Jim would horse around in the basement where all the maintenance supplies were kept. If something broke or spilled, they would try to blame it on me, but my mother would not buy their stories because on Saturday mornings I was upstairs glued to the TV watching cartoons.

My father had a boat and we would go out on Sunday afternoons. One summer when I was around 14, Charlie and Joyce would show up in his speedboat between Prudence and Patience Islands where we were anchored and teach my girlfriend, Diane and me how to waterski. It took me all summer to get the hang of it, but Charlie was patient and encouraging. When I finally could get up on skis, Charlie took Diane and me over to Goddard Park and we skied in front of everyone at the beach there. Now when I go swimming at Goddard Park and the speedboats with skiers appear, I always think of Charlie and time I skied there.
	When it was time for Poly and Gene to retire from Yorktown and me to go off the college, Charlie and another relative John Chapell took over Yorktown.  I was relieved they did that, because I worried that my father would kill himself trying to keep Yorktown going. At that point in time my father had a broken back and was in no shape to keep Yorktown going. I will always be grateful to Charlie and John for taking over Yorktown.
	One final thought. The Bible says “it is appointed unto man once to die”. My dad, Gene, died on Sept 12th, my Aunt Dora Roy died on Sept.13th and my mother Ruth died on Sept 15th. So it was not a surprise to me when Charlie died on Sept 14th. They are all buried in Mansion Memorial Park. The day Charlie died was not a happenstance; it was a divine appointment.

When Poly and Gene started building housed in Hamilton, south of Wickford, R.I., Charlie and Jim (I think) would get paid to work on the houses on Saturdays. This was after Charlie got his driver’s license and would drive down to the worksite himself. One Saturday in the summer Poly and Gene went down to Hamilton to check on the progress Charlie and Jim were making on a house.  Well Charlie, Jim and Charlie’s car were nowhere to be found. Poly and Gene decided to go look for them. Poly and Gene found them at Scarborough Beach swimming and watching the girls go by! Charlie and Jim were in hot water for a long time. Their paychecks got docked for a few weeks. I think that was the most trouble Charlie ever got into while working for Poly and Gene!
When I was about 7, my father Gene, bough a green and white Edsel station wagon. I fell in love with that car and told my Dad that when I got my driver’s license, I wanted that car to drive around in. Well, about the time Lee Ann was born, my Dad decided to sell the Edsel and Charlie bought it. I told Charlie he had to take good care of it because I wanted it back when I turned 16. Charlie did take good care of it. He even bought a junked Elsel for spare parts when he could no long buy parts for it at the dealership. I liked the fact that Charlie had the Edsel because I got to see it once in a while. But sadly one day the Edsel had to be junked when Charlie could no longer get the parts he needed to keep it running. By the time I was 16, I realized that having an old car to drive around in was not very practical and that everything had worked out for the best when Dad bought me a new car.
	


Part 3
	Poly had finished a room in his basement and when Charlie and Theresa were teenagers, they held dance parties in the basement on weekends. All the neighborhood teens would come and dance to the records they had. My favorite song was a silly hit called the Purple People Eater. On weekends when we visited Poly and Bwenzy, my parents would send me down to the party in the basement while the adults stayed upstairs and visited. On the way home, Mom and Dad would ask me what went on in the basement, so being a dumb little kid I would tell all and Charlie and Theresa would usually end up in trouble. No wonder the big kids did not want me around!!!
	There was one time, however, when I did not tell on Charlie. When I was in 6th grade one weekend night when I was in the basement, Charlies put me in the broom closet under the cellar stairs and gave me a lit cigarette to smoke. I guess he thought that was a good way to keep me out of his hair. Well I coughed my head off trying to smoke that cigarette and decided I did not like it and never touched another cigarette. It was not long after that incident that my Mom learned that Charlie was smoking and that put an end to me going downstairs to the dance party. If my Mom had ever found out that Charlie was trying to get me to smoke, Charlie and I would have been in big, big trouble. Later Poly bought a pool table and put it in the basement. That put an end to the dance parties because the pool table took up a lot of space. I liked to watch Charlie play pool. He got quite good at it.






	Part 2 
I was the little kid who always wanted to hang out with the big kids (Charlie and Theresa), but could never keep up. I will never forget the time Charlie, Theresa and I went to the movies. I think we were going to see an Elvis Presley movie. My father, Gene, drove us to the movie house in East Greenwich and dropped us off. When we realized that the theater was closed, my father was long gone. So Charlie found a pay phone and called back to the office at Yorktown to report that Dad needed to come back and pick us up. Charlie decided that instead of waiting around, we would start walking back iand not just stand around and wait. We got about 2 or 3 blocks when I wore out, so Charlie picked me up and carried me on his shoulders. What an adventure for me! We got to the bottom of the hill across from where you turn off of Route 1 to go the Goddard Park when my father showed up. What a big, strong cousin I had!
	Another time a snake was trying to eat a toad back behind one of the houses on Ranger Road in Yorktown. Someone had reported the problem to my Mom, Ruth. No sooner had the incident been reported than I was off to see what was happening. All the kids in the neighborhood were gathered around the snake and they were all upset that the snake had the toad in its mouth.  All of us were afraid to touch the snake. The next thing I know, Charlie showed up with a shovel, killed the snake and the toad hopped away safe and sound. Charlie was the hero of the hour. Ruth had sent him over to kill the snake.


My Dear Charles,
How do I get through another day without you by my side. I'm so grateful to you for loving me. You entered into my life at one of my lowest moments. You brought happiness, joy, excitement and love into my life.  Oh yes sometimes a little heartache.  At times I considered you the spear in my side but the arrow in my heart. 
But most importantly was the love we shared with each other.
Charles, you had so many wonderful qualities.  Harsh but kind, generous, affectionate and loving.                                                                       You were never afraid to take on the big challenges in life, whether on the job or the big travel adventures of life.
Wherever life would take you. You were up for the challenge.
One of the many attributes I loved and admired about you.
 
Goodbye my Dear Charles, this is not the end,                                                                                     
I'll miss you and love you until we meet again.
Love you to the moon and back.
