I will always remember how much my father loved having fires in his fireplace. He would sit in his chair with his feet up on the hearth and crack Macadamia nuts with Vice-Grip pliers. He roasted the nuts by placing them on the hearth close to the fire. Every time I have a fire in my fireplace, I will think of that.

He also loved sitting in coffee houses and talking with people. My brothers and I would meet him at Peets or The Pannikin in Leucadia and talk about what's in the news or politics. He had a passion for information about the world that I will always share.

My children loved having him over for meals and holidays and often asked about when Papa Gerry was coming over next. He was always in the neighborhood and often dropped in to say hello or drop off firewood or some other treat for our family.

We will miss him so much.

Gerry was a stoic, curious man with a great sense of adventure.  When I joined the family 20 years ago, I marveled at his passion for information and love of travel.  I remember one time he left his home for several days, and informed me he had driven to Central Valley in search of a particular Japanese peach farmer he had read about in the newspaper.  Gerry was determined to find the perfect peach!   He enjoyed grafting his own trees to grow various produce that met his high standards.  He was a hard, do-it-yourself worker and until he became ill stopped by our home on a frequent basis to bring fresh avocados, herbs or flowers from his garden.  He loved to sit at our counter for lunch accompanied his favorite drink -- root beer -- which we always kept on hand for him knowing how much he loved it.  Our children, Riley, Sean and Robbie, enjoyed the holidays with him and were thrilled that Gerry attended many of their childhood performances and sport activities.  He has been -- and will continue to be -- missed by his family.

  My first vivid remembrance of my Uncle Gerry are over fifty years ago. I was a frightened six year old little girl being sent to Utah. I had never been out of California. My mother was a young divorcee getting remarried. She knew I'd be safe with my Uncle Gerry's family. I not only felt safe, I felt loved and Uncle Gerry taught me my first lesson in water conservation. He was the one that had us kids take turns and share one tub of bath water. I remember feeling special because I got to bathe first.
  A few years later when my stepfather was stationed in Virginia we would visit Uncle Gerry his family in Florida. We would all go camping in the Keys, Uncle Gerry loved the outdoors! 
  When both our families ended back in California I spent many days on Lone Jack Rd at all the houses Uncle Gerry build. He always took the time to talk to me, never down to me. I learned a lot about horses, mini bikes, gardening, raising chicken, 4-H animals, and did I say horses? And thank you Uncle Gerry for always having so many National Geographic magazines around. 
  I can't leave out Uncle Gerry teaching me to water ski at Lake Mead as a gawky preteen. There were lots of cousins wanting to ski, but Uncle Gerry calmly made sure I would learn to stand up & glide across the water. He taught me perseverance.
     As the years went by, I wouldn't see my Uncle as often, but would smile with memories when looking at the crystal bowl he had given Lee & I as a wedding gift.
  I love the memories of Uncle Gerry coming to the nursery. Lee & I would talk to him about fruit trees, real estate, his travels, horses and water conservation.
  I do not understand why life's paths twist and turn and sometimes come to a cliff or canyon.
   I do know that my Uncle Gerry was a positive influence in my life and I will always love and miss him.

"Ask a man for his credit, if it is good he will show you, he is proud of it. If it is bad, he will huff and puff and complain about your questioning his integrity. He has shown you what you need to know." My Dad shared that and many other wise sayings that are with me every day I wake. I will miss you Dad. You prepared me for manhood through word and example. I could not ask for more. I love you.

What an admired and loved father and grandfather!  I treasure the opportunity I have had to marry into the Glatts family and to call Gerry - Dad, and to know him as a gentleman and a caring father.  He inspired our sons in the areas of science, aviation, space, hiking, camping and waterskiiing.  Dad, we will miss you so much.  With Love, from Linda Glatts

My wife Pam and I feel deep sadness yet have great warm memories getting to know Gerald at Christmases in Montana.
