Howard L. Matthews III

Décédé(e) le 27 août 2020

Howard Lynn Matthews III, 66, of Rancho Santa Fe, California, passed away on August 27th, 2020, surrounded by family. He was born on August 1, 1954 in New London, Connecticut to Howard Lynn Matthews, Jr (Matty) and Rosemary Matthews. As a Navy dependent and the eldest of three children, he took pride in surviving 23 moves in 21 years. He graduated from Point Loma High School in San Diego and he received his Bachelor's Degree from Occidental College in Los Angeles, where he played football and rugby. He later earned his MBA from the University of California, Berkeley. He met Terri, the love of his life, in San Francisco on a blind date--where they later married on August 28th, 1982. Howard is survived by his wife, Terri; twin sons, Tyler (wife Cassandra) and Jason (wife Mallory); sister, Susan Matthews; and grandchildren Tyler Jr. and Harper. Howard was predeceased by parents, 'Matty' and Rosemary Matthews, and brother, Hammond Drew Matthews. Howard had a successful career in executive management and consulting. He was the President and COO of Quantum Corporation and President and CEO of Certance, a former affiliate of Seagate Technology. He was also one of the founding officers and CFO of Office Club Inc. His greatest accomplishment in life was his family, which he always put first. He loved his family, friends and community fiercely. Those who knew Howard spoke of him as a true gentleman, in every sense of the word.

Howard lived a truly fulfilling life and without regret. Upon his diagnosis, he mentioned, "I have done everything I have ever wanted to do." He was an incredibly private person, not wishing to burden others with his ailment. Through his battle with leukemia, he continued to share his contagious smile each day.

Howard shared his love with us, so we could serve others. He taught us to be strong, so we could overcome challenges; and he shared his love for God, so that our faith would always be bigger than our fear. He was our warrior Prince whom we loved with all our hearts.

Due to the pandemic the family will celebrate a private Funeral Mass and inurnment.

In Lieu of flowers please consider donations in Howard's memory, to the National Bone Marrow Registry at “Be The Match”: http://www.bethematchfoundation.org/goto/howardmatthews

It was with shock that we received the news that Howard Matthews had passed away.
The lyric, "only the good die young," resounded in our heads because Howard was a genuinely good guy! The epitome of a Gentleman! Why Howard? The world needs MORE men like Howard, please don't take him away!
Howard taught a valuable lesson in how to live a beautiful life and how to face a peaceful death.
How his marriage to Terri was ever so sweet, in-love, filled with mutual respect and support. Being humble and God-fearing, Jason and Tyler are reflections of Howard's "loving God and Family First," example on how to conduct their lives.
Yes, Howard had a successful business resume; yet, he boasted that it was his family that was his greatest accomplishment!
Terri reminded us that Howard said that he "had done everything he wanted to do." We take that to mean that Howard did everything GOD wanted him to do, too!
Heaven must be rejoicing right now! With that thought in mind, we can smile through our tears.
With Love and in Sympathy, Anne & Tom Donahoe

Dear Terri and family, we are so sorry for your loss. Howard was, indeed, such a gentleman. He was truly a man of whom you could only say good things. He was our friend, an excellent human, and our fearless leader. We are grateful to have gotten to work under his mentorship. We are grateful to call him our friend. He had an amazing way to connect with people -- I remember his telling me that he knew I was from Hawaii because of the inflection in my voice - thus began a great, on-going, conversation about growing up in Hawaii -- and in Navy families. Aloha Oe dear Howard.

Deepest sympathy and empathy to Terri and the family on the sad loss of Howard.
Fond memories of time spent together on Celebrity Millennium transitioning the Panama Canal to celebrate a very special wedding anniversary with my late husband Martin. Howard was a super man who will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Julie XX
