I've known Joanne my whole life.  She and Jimmy grew up with my mom.  Just after Mom passed Dad, Mom's cousin, John Marsh and I visited.  I had never had pistachios until our visit, an odd thing to say.... It meant so much.  She and Jimmy are the most energetic people I know.  
Sad to say I  just was going to call Joanne last week to let her know I was going back to school to get my Masters in Psychology.  I love she and Jimmy so much.  Oh my...heart is broken.   The most broken since my mom died.

The loss of Joanne Callan is deeply felt.  She was my mentor, dissertation chair and friend.  She was always kind, thoughtful, giving and loving. For many years we spent a great deal of time together in various endeavors and I will always cherish my memories of her.  She was extremely intelligent, loved her Dr. Peppers and talking about interesting ideas on the fluidity of gender, developmental lines, and attachment theories.   Her contributions to the psychological and psychoanalytic communities were numerous.  Her stories, smile, and her friendship will be greatly missed.  It's not possible to fully express how much she meant to me, but she became like family.  My condolences to Jim, Megan and her entire family.  I know this is a tremendous loss. It is with a heavy heart and tears in my eyes that I read this news.  Dr. Callan played a role in my life for decades, at times quietly and peripherally, and at times actively and directly.   

I first learned of Dr. Callan while a student at the Bishop’s School.   Having my share of challenging teenage times, I knew she was there as a support to students and guide to the counseling staff.   As my interest in clinical psychology grew, learning that she was on the faculty of CSPP gave me encouragement to pursue the program and my career.   Early in my graduate education I leapt at the opportunity to take her Psychodynamic Psychotherapy course and connect more closely to her--- I’m grateful to say to this very day, I recall much of what she spoke.   As my studies progressed, I requested that she sit on my dissertation committee—a request to which she graciously obliged.   Through that grueling and at times seemingly endless process, she remained a gentle yet steady support.  And as she sat with pride as I successfully defended and launched my career as a clinician, I was so deeply honored to share those moments with someone who had for so long been a player in the story of my life.  

I will remember Dr. Callan as exuding a calm and kindness in our interactions, communicating with a consistent warmth and wisdom and in a way that created moments that have endured the test of time.   My greatest regret is that I missed the opportunity to reach out and thank her for the influence she has had on me, and my promise to her legacy is that I will continue to carry the knowledge she imparted and the way of being she exemplified as I go forth in my career and in my life.

May her memory be a source of strength, inspiration and blessing.  


Throughout my time at Alliant, I always felt like Dr. Callan was rooting for me to graduate. I always left every one-on-one with her feeling motivated that I could power through grad school during times of doubt. To this day, I carry her teachings, her jokes, and her stories with me. 

I'm not sure what I cherished more in my time with Dr. Callan - all the psychoanalytic discussions or our talks on college football. She had a tremendous impact on my clinical development. Thank you Dr. Callan. KM
