while to process and cope with, John 16:22 says “Therefore you too have grief now; but I will
see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you”.
Bill was born on September 27, 1930, to Martin and Anna (Bodeke) Schlundt in South Bend,
Indiana. He married Louise Van Der Beke of Mishawaka, Indiana, on July 3, 1952. Bill and Louise
met on a blind date and their marriage lasted (68 years) until Louise’s passing in January 2021.
Bill and Louise spent their first chapters of their life in Mishawaka, Indiana before moving to
Englewood, Florida. They were members of Saint Bavo’s Church in Mishawaka, Indiana as well
as St. Raphael Catholic Church in Englewood, Florida.
Bill attended Clay High School and Indiana University where he earned a BA and MAEd. During
his career he taught the first couple of years in Mishawaka before moving to the South Bend
School Corporation to teach the remaining years until his retirement in 1989. As a Math
Teacher, a Coach and later as the Athletic Director he was a role model to so many through his
hard work, dedication, professionalism, integrity, and positivity. When not working he enjoyed
traveling and camping with his family across the country, which was the highlight of the year.
Additionally, he loved the Indiana Hoosiers and an occasional round of golf where he was
fortunate to have shot two holes in one. Bill and Louise loved gardening and antiquing. Their
yard featured beautiful flowers, shrubs, trees, and even a railroad. They operated an antique
booth in the Unique Antique Mall in South Bend. They loved going to antique auctions in
Shipshewana, Indiana.
He lived a long and prosperous life full of love and support from his family. Bill is survived by his
four children William (Drinda) Jr, Marianne Weber (Vogel), Steven (Kimberly), Randall (Julie), 13
grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother
Don, and son-in-law Greg Vogel.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Rapahel Catholic Church in Englewood, Florida on
Monday, June 3,2024 at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka,
Indiana, date to be determined.
