Eleanor Burd Dilworth, 100, died peacefully of natural causes on March 31, 2012, surrounded by her children and cared for by the loving staff of the Casa de las Campanas Special Care Residence. She was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania on July 8, 1911, and remained open-minded and adventurous throughout her long life. She went to church as a young girl in a horse and buggy, crossed the Atlantic on the Queen Mary, lead bicycling groups across Canada and down the west coast, drove across the U.S. with 5 young children while towing a trailer and camping every night, hosted 2 foreign exchange students, and in her mid-70’s spent 3 weeks bicycling through rural China. She taught school, was an excellent pianist, and founded a pre-school in Santa Monica which still operates today. And there was much, much more. Her husband, Jack, died in l996.
Eleanor loved life and made raising 5 children seem effortless. She is survived by her daughters Nancy Adams of Taos, New Mexico, Anne Valley-Fox of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Helen Dilworth of Santa Cruz, Ca. and sons John Dilworth of Baywood Park, Ca. and Tom Dilworth of Escondido. She is also survived by her “adopted” sons: Gerhard Rutz and his wife Iris of Lucerne, Switzerland, and Koji Shinozaki and his wife Corinne of Tochigi-Ken, Japan. There are also many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many of whom seem to be following in her well-traveled footsteps.
Eleanor’s family threw a large and well attended party for her 100th birthday. Her memorial service will take place this summer at Little Harbor, Catalina Island, and her ashes spread at sea.
