

Jeffery Lynn McDonald, O.D., Med, was born in Decatur County Indiana on March 20, 1941 to Fred and Wilma McDonald. He attended Purdue University and graduated from Indiana University with a Master of Optometry and was conferred a Doctor of Optometry. After graduation, he joined the Medical Service Corps of the US Navy and was stationed at Camp Pendleton. While there, he met Joan “Ginger” McDonald, BSN, RN, US Navy Nurse Corps. They were married on October 16, 1966 on the schooner “Sea Wyf.” Ginger was the nickname he gave her the night they met.
After their tours of duty, they settled in Escondido in 1969 and he established his Optometric Practice while his wife went to work at Palomar Medical Center. Jeff was a member of the American Optometric Association, local and national organizations. He was very active in the Big Brothers program. He worked with the Lions Club. His other activities were also taken up with Flying Samaritans, Masonic Consuelo Lodge and Al Bahr Shrine. He became a certified pilot and flew Cessna’s for several years. He played bike polo, and did mountain biking. As his wife was an avid horsewoman raising Arabian horses and showing horses, he learned to ride and even played arena polo. They traveled to Scotland for times to trace his and his wife’s ancestry and see the country and stayed at Lord McDonald’s Kinloch Lodge on the Isle of Skye. Jeffery retired in January of 2009.
On January 3, 2013 at the age of 71, Jeffery passed away of Alzheimer’s disease. His sense of humor was well known and shall never be forgotten. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Norman Gene. Survived by his wife Ginger; sister-in-law’s, Lynne and Maradean and three nieces in Indiana and a host of friends.
