Mom to one, but like a mother to many, Barbara lived a life devoted to her family both near and far, biological and “adopted.”
Born to Clarence and Eleanor (Simas), Barbara began her life in Salinas, California. A self-motivated and socially-minded student, she spent her school-aged years receiving high marks and participating in activities like Junior Achievement. In both 1961 & 1962, she was recognized as a role model in her community and crowned queen at Gilroy’s annual Portuguese festa. Driven by a strong work ethic and a love for learning, a self-motivated Barbara supported herself through college – ultimately earning a Masters Degree.
However, her greatest achievement and source of abundant joy is her only daughter, Kim McReynolds. As a mother and grandmother Barbara was committed to the wellbeing of her family, either speaking to or seeing them daily. She was a truly dedicated and loving mother, who was and will remain the person Kim looks up to most.
Respected as a counselor, confidant, and cheerleader, Barbara’s generous nature and mother’s heart blessed many – especially youth. Her home was always open to someone needing to talk or a place to stay, whether it was long or short-term.
As a member of Eureka’s chapter of the National Exchange Club for many years, Barbara was committed to making a difference in the community and creatively fostering team spirit within the club.
Kim along with friends and family members will always remember years of amazing Halloween and birthday parties, which showcased Barbara’s artistic talents and passion for bringing people together in celebration.
In honor of her love for a good party and her favorite travel destination - Hawaii, a Celebration of Life Luau will be held at three o’clock this Sunday, July 29, 2012, at the Eureka Women’s Club, located at 1531 J St, Eureka, CA 95501.
Barbara is survived by her beloved daughter Kim and son-in-law Jay; grandchildren Kyle and Kara Kline and Evan McReynolds; partner Hal Lowery and family; sister Betty Newton; brother Ken Simas; nieces DeAnn Aguila and Amber Pryor; nephews Adam Simas and Ricardo Aguila; uncle Richard and aunt Lorraine Simas, and numerous cousins.
In lieu of flowers, please send contributions in memory of Barbara Hammann to Humboldt County CASA, a non-profit organization which trains advocates for local foster youth: www.humboldtcasa.org.
