Uncle Bill,

Your family welcomed us in when I was just an infant and for a while we called your home -- our home.  Growing up so close to you allowed me to really get a sense of you and your family. The memories that our families made together will keep me smiling a lifetime.  Some highlights:  sneaking peeks over your back fence at the drive-in movie theater; throwing a baseball with you; your music room; you, dad and Uncle Bob doing the softshoe dance; getting bitten by Jitter (a fond memory strangely since the scar has reminded me of my childhood with you), getting attacked by your rooster -- but it sure was good at dinner that night!   Your striking blue eyes and James Dean good looks made you cool enough but the fact that you were so into music and dance is what made me look up to you.  I still and always will love Bluegrass because of you and dad. The welcome refrain of your laughter brings a sweet smile to my face -- I will never forget your laugh -- and there was so much of it in our home when you would come to visit.  I will always cherish the lovely letter you just sent me.  I wish we could have seen each other more in my adulthood, but I think you know how important you were to me growing up.  I will miss you, sweet Uncle.  Your loving niece,  Kate

Dixie and family,
I had the pleasure of meeting Bill during his hospital stay. Even though he was quite ill he joked with us and filled the room with his laughter and smile!
Wish I had the opportunity to have known him more.
My sincere sympathy goes out to you and all of your wonderful family.

Dear McBride Family:
Bill was a longtime draftsman for Omsberg & Company (now Omsberg & Preston), and for Griffith & Associates before that, who was particularly noted for his unique style of drafting.  He had a way of turning an ordinary map into a work of art!  When Bill retired, Ken Omsberg did not want to lose the style unique to our maps – a style that Bill himself had created so many years before – so he had that lettering style made into a font.  We refer to that font as the “McBride font”.  When Ken Omsberg passed away in 2007 I wrote to Bill, asking if he would allow me to continuing using the McBride font on our maps.  I only met Bill once . . . that was the day he came by the office to tell me that he’d be honored if we continued on with the McBride lettering style.  I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to meet him, and will think of him fondly with every map we file with the County of Humboldt.

Dear family of Mr. Bill McBride, although I never had to pleasure of meeting Mr. McBride, I felt like I was a huge part of his heritage as an amazing draftsman and artist.  I worked for Ken Omsberg for many years using Bill's beautiful penmanship every day with the font that we used on the computer to draw our Maps. My heart goes out to you all for your lose.

Dear Dixie,  I was so saddened to learn of the loss of your husband, Bill.  I knew him as being very dear, very supportive.   My heart goes out to you and to your family at this most difficult time.

Uncle Bill,
I was so glad I got to see you and spend time with you while I was an adult, but after seeing the beautiful slide show Dixie put together (which made me cry), I realize there was so much more I could have learned.  I would love to hear you play music, and watch you dance just one more time.  You were, and are, very special to me.  Love and peace to all those you left behind.  I love you...

Dear Aunt Dixie,
  Thinking of you at this difficult time, Take hold of the memories you have made together and keep them close. Hold dear your family they will be there to support you. I know Uncle Bill will be dearly missed. My deepest sympathy to you and the family.

Dad,
There was not enough time, so many more memories we had hoped for and memories we could have treasured.  Billy wanted one more chance to play music with you and I would have so loved to have seen that. But we will hold in our hearts the love and joy you so readily shared with everyone, that love will help to keep our hearts warm in this bitterly cold time.  There is a place in our hearts that holds all of our memories of you and they will live there forever.

Dad,  I have looked up to you all my life. I will continue to look up to you, searching the skies for your gentle smile.  You were there for me as I grew into a man and I have spent my life trying to make you proud. I am so glad you got to meet and spend time with Kathy, I know you were proud of my choice in a wife.
