

He was a graduate of West Hazelton High School, West Hazelton, Pennsylvania Attended the American Banking Institute, University of Evansville.
Bernie's first job was with the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company installing the first ever electrical cables through the Pocono Mountains. He served in the US Army from 1953-1956 during the Korean War where, following basic army training, he transferred to the 82nd Airborne Division and became a qualified parachutist with 69 parachute jumps to his credit.After the war, he and his unit spent 2 years testing newly designed parachutes in Alaska and Greenland.
For almost 30 years, he was owner and operator of Kalena's Car Wash and Parking in downtown Evansville. Bernard retired from NBD (National Bank of Detroit as Private Banking Officer Prior to NBD, he was the business development officer, branch manager at Peoples Savings Bank, Evansville, and branch manager, Jasper, of Credi Thrift Financial. He and his wife, Dee, were part-time tour directors for AAA and Jackie's Journeys, and traveled throughout the United States and abroad. He was a member and served on the Boards of Directors of Downtown Kiwanis, Center City Corporation, Victory Theatre Fund Drive, Freedom Festival, Jasper Civitan, and a member of Harlaxton Society and Samuel Johnson Society.
Bernard is survived by his loving wife of nearly 70 years, Delores (Schaber) Kalena; daughter, Kay (David) Hoffherr; grandsons, Jonathon (Kayla) Hoffherr and Benjamin (Megan) Hoffherr; sister, Marion Kotch, Kelayres, Pennsylvania; brother, John (Barbara) Kalena, White Haven, Pennsylvania; and nieces and nephews. and 5 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by parents: Bernard H. and Mary Kalena, McAdoo, Pennsylvania.
