

Dorothy Mae Hammond of Evansville, IN, passed away on Friday, April 4, 2025 at her home at the age of 90. She was born in Evansville on April 30, 1934 to Henry and Regina Opperman but was raised by her uncle and aunt, Oscar and Esther Opperman.
Dorothy graduated from Reitz High School. She was a member of VFW Post #1114 Auxiliary. Dorothy enjoyed playing bingo, playing cards, reading and spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her aunt and uncle who raised her; husband, Charles Hammond; and grandson, Jonathan Pfender.
Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Vicky Frey, Amy (Roy) Elder and Joy Nelson (Bill Crowe); sons, Jeffery (Peggy) Hammond, Gregory Hammond and Rodney (Mindy) Hammond; grandchildren, Charles Frey, Jr., Christopher Frey (Rachel Crouch), Joshua (Patricia) Hammond-Kelley, Macey Hammond, Zachary (Codie) Nelson, Kyle (Tori) Nelson, Wendy (Joey) Jones, Tim Pfender, Jacob Ivey, Logan (Marchantia) Ivey, Tyler Ivey; and 14 great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9, 2025 at Alexander West Chapel, 2100 West Illinois Street in Evansville, officiated by Pastor Joshua Hammond-Kelley. Burial will follow in Alexander Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may visit from 1:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2025 at the funeral home, and on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
The family would like to thank Heart to Heart Hospice for the care and compassion they showed our loved one in her final days. The family would also like to thank caregivers, Joy Reidford, Terri Swain and Bille Simmons for the daily care they gave their mother over the last seven years.
