Erna May (McBrayer) Johnson, 97, of Evansville, passed to her heavenly home on April 10, 2016. She was born April 29, 1918, in Wagner, Kentucky and was the last living descendant of 12 children born to Benjamin F. and Myrtle White McBrayer who owned and operated a large farm, blacksmith shop, veterinary, and local grocery. She had many wonderful memories of her childhood and often told stories of her life growing up in rural Kentucky.
Her life centered around home and family while devoting many of her talents to the various Baptist Churches she and her husband Curtis, attended. She was very artistic and especially loved oil painting and writing poetry. She enjoyed teaching Bible classes, cooking, decorating, and playing the guitar. She loved nature and enjoyed walking in the woods and sitting around an open fire visiting with friends and family. Due to the nature of Curtis’ work, they moved often, ultimately living in 55 locations during their 77 years of marriage until his death in 2013 at the age of 99. Erna was extremely talented in preparing for a move on short notice and making each home a haven for the family while also teaching her children how to embrace and adapt to new situations.
She was an elegant lady who took great pride in all that she did. She had a quick sense of humor and enjoyed life to the fullest. What a reunion it will be in her heavenly home!
Surviving Erna are her son, Vernon Johnson (Nancy); two daughters, Roberta Collins Thomas (Ronald) and Janet Krietenstein (Keith); as well as eight grandsons, Mike Collins, David Collins, Clint Johnson, Brad Johnson, Drew Johnson, Doug Johnson, Shane Hope and Justin Hope; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to acknowledge Dr. William Hardesty for the many years of compassionate care provided to Erna and to the loving and supportive staff in the Reflections Unit at the Heritage Center.
A private service officiated by Rev. Lynn Marino will be conducted on Wednesday, April 20, 2016, with burial immediately following at Alexander Memorial Cemetery. Condolences may be made online at AlexanderNorthChapel.com.
