A true West-Sider, Ervin played football at Reitz High School, graduating in 1958. He went on to graduate from Evansville College (now University of Evansville) in 1964, where he participated in the mechanical engineering co-op program.
As a mechanical engineer, Ervin worked at International Steel, Babcock & Wilcox, Anaconda Aluminum, Kaelin Industries and MAI Engineering, before retiring from Savage Engineering. He loved tinkering, engineering, and mechanical design so much he was heard to say he’d “never worked a day in his life.”
Ervin was an Eagle Scout, an avid horseman, a weekend fisherman, and a proficient gardener, but most of all, he was a master story teller. He loved nothing more than to sit and “shoot the breeze,” spinning stories of the camping and horse riding exploits of his youth.
Ervin was preceded in death by his wife, Jan (Wingert) Savage, his parents, Victor and Elizabeth Savage, a younger sister, Joyce Kingon, and a heart-adopted son, Ron Green.
He is survived by his daughters, Jetalyn “Jetti” Willett (Stephan “Fritz”), and Jolene “Jo” Hatfield (Wyeth); six grandchildren, Gwen McTaggart (Kenneth), Travis Willett (Sara), Micah Berg (Bryon), Ira “Kelson” Hatfield (Taylor), Kendrich Hatfield (Emily), and Kassidon Hatfield; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 28, 2021 at Alexander West Chapel. Friends and family may visit Tuesday, from 2:00 p.m. until service time. A live-stream of the funeral service may be viewed at www.facebook.com\funeralstreamusa beginning at 5:50 p.m. on Tuesday.
