Eugene Gilbert "Buzz" Latham, III

Eugene Gilbert “Buzz” Latham, III , of Evansville, Indiana passed away on July 2, 2023 at the age of 71 from injuries due to a cycling and car accident. Buzz was born on September 13, 1951 in Evansville, IN.

Buzz graduated in 1969 Summa Cum Laude and was National Merit Scholar from Bosse High School. After attending IU, Buzz worked as a driver for Atlas Office Supplies and warehouse manager for Boise Paper. Later, Buzz became an over the road driver. In November 2022, he retired from Wayne Transport as an OTR driver of a Pneumatic Tanker Truck.

Buzz was an avid reader and loved all sports. He was a big fan of IU and would often watch the games with friends while discussing his most recent flavor of imported beer. He also enjoyed spending time with family as well as cycling, hiking, walking, working out at the gym and practicing yoga.

Retirement brought Buzz much joy. He loved eating breakfast and walking his grandson, Layne to school each morning. Tuesday and Friday mornings were set aside for EVPL storytime and Little Eco Scholars at Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve with granddaughter, Saoirse. He was proud as a peacock to watch his grandson, Gavin earn his high school diploma and begin his career as an EMT.

Although Buzz was an extremely bright person, he never boasted on his knowledge and enjoyed meeting and talking with new people. He was hard-working, honest and cared about the environment so much he would often stop and pick up litter on the ground. Buzz was a supportive and devoted husband, fun and energetic father and grandfather. Often, he would not only play chase with his grandchildren but other children, as they gravitated towards his fun energy. He had a great character and a kindness for both animals and people. Buzz was a great friend and enjoyed time with his “tennis group”, neighbors, gym and yoga clan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene, Jr. and Martha (Wilson) Latham; Step-mother, Rosemary (Norbury) Latham; brother-in-laws, Richard Wanderman, John Hall, Hughie Jones, Woodrow McFadin, Jr., and Brian Phillips; sister-in-laws, Elizabeth Hall and Rita Jones; and niece, Robin Phillips.

Buzz is survived by his wife of 35 years, Brenda Latham; daughter, Meredith Pancake (Jake) of Evansville, IN; son, Elliot Latham of Jeffersonville, IN; grandchildren, Gavin, Layne and Saoirse; sisters, Anne Wanderman, Margaret Bosse (Greg), Betsy Latham and Mary Weeks (Bill); sister-in-laws, Theresa McFadin, Debbie Hillebrand (Jim), Linda Fendrich (Mike), Karen Bush and Pam Phillips; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, family requests contributions be made to Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve.
