Jane grew up in a family of nine children and often recounted stories of chasing hens around the yard trying to find their hidden eggs. As a young woman, Jane was smitten by a handsome Marine she met at the Royal Theater and married him two weeks later in 1946. During her 61 years of marriage to David, Jane was involved in the Ladies Auxiliary Club and several VFW functions, while raising their three children. Jane’s love for her husband was evident, as every time they parted, she never left without giving him a peck on the lips.
She led an active life and enjoyed traveling. She was an avid bowler, enjoyed growing flowers and was a member of the McCutchanville Community Church. She faithfully attended her weekly clabber club for over 50 years with some of her dearest friends. Jane traveled throughout the US with her husband during her involvement with the VFW. She made several trips to see the West Coast with her travel buddy and sister, Mickey. Jane was also fond of Walt Disney World and took each of her grandchildren to see Mickey Mouse. She was a selfless grandmother, always attending the athletic and arts events of her grandchildren, and never missed a birthday or important event. She was the cornerstone of the family, always nourishing family members each holiday with a feast.
Jane was often described by all who met her as a “sweet” and kind woman, who was devoted to her family. She quickly touched your heart with her thoughtfulness and her want to make you comfortable. Jane was compassionate, empathetic, and rarely uttered a bad word about anyone. She was also feisty and independent; as she once made David walk home from the bowling alley after a lover’s spat, leading to decades of being teased with the song “These Boots Were Made for Walking.” We hope Jane has found her way back to David, because she has been lost without him.
Jane was preceded in death by her husband, David Unferferth, in 2008.
She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Leroy and Susie Hale; daughter and son-in-law, Darlena and Gerald Bachman; daughter, Debbie Unferferth; son and daughter-in-law, David and Shea Unferferth; grandchildren, Sean and Emily Bachman, Jennifer Kinder, Tiffany Herrell, Melanie Patterson and Cory Unferferth; great-grandchildren, Desiree, Noah, Caelynn, Shea and Aspen; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at Alexander East Chapel, officiated by Rev. John Hilbert with burial in Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may visit Tuesday from 2:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
