James was a Veteran of the Marine Corp, where he served as an aviation electronic technician. He graduated from Central High School in 1953. James attended the University of Evansville where he played football. He retired from the Teamsters Union as a truck driver. James was a muscle car enthusiast. The love of his life was his wife, LaVon Gray and he especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Jenny (Gray) Buttrum.
James is survived by wife of 60 years, LaVon Gray; daughter, Tamara M. Buono; son, Matthew Gray; grandchildren, Tasha Covert, Amanda Porter, Jordan Gray and Jacob Gray; great grandchildren, Caiden Covert, Paisley Covert and Dallas James Porter Alexander; and God son, Jimmy Isonhood.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, 2020, at Alexander West Chapel, with burial in Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit from noon until service time at the chapel on Wednesday.
