

After graduating from Bishop DuBourg High School in 1965, Joan went to work for the St. Louis Medical Society where she met her future husband. After marrying in 1976, Joan and Art moved to Evansville, IN when Art took a job at the Evansville Courier. After giving birth to her daughter Jennifer in 1979, Joan was a stay at home mother for several years, during which time she spent many hours volunteering at Jennifer’s school, Holy Spirit. Eventually, she went back to work in the medical field; she worked for many years in medical records at Women’s Health Care, PC.
In her spare time, Joan enjoyed reading, Sudoku puzzles and making crafts - Joan’s family and friends were often gifted with her handmade keepsakes.
Joan is survived by her husband of 43 years, Arthur Otis; her daughter Jennifer Otis of Indianapolis; brothers Tom Whalen (Ronnie) of Manhattan, KS and Pat Whalen (Peggy) of St. Louis, MO; sister Kathy Whalen (Joe McCarthy) of Kansas City, MO; nieces Molly Nick of Olathe, KS, Katie Whalen of St. Louis, MO, and Kallie Thomas of Overland Park, KS; and nephews Tim Whalen of Florissant, MO and Brian Whalen of St. Louis, MO. Joan was born on November 25, 1946 in St. Louis, MO to the late John Patrick Whalen and the late Mary Jane (McAuliffe) Whalen.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday May 4, 2019 at Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit Friday 4-7 p.m. at Alexander East Chapel.
