

Lionel Reed Phelps, 77, of Princeton, passed away on March 9, 2026. He was born on August 3, 1948, in Daylight, Indiana, to Daisy Mae Phelps and Oscar Slaughter Phelps. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Laquita (Fitzgerald) Phelps; three sisters; two brothers; and his granddaughter, Jordyn Nelson.
Lionel retired from Bristol Myers after 32 years of dedicated service and was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force. Known for his intelligence and curiosity, he had a lifelong interest in American history and enjoyed working with his hands. He handcrafted a cedar strip canoe and took great pride in restoring his old barn.
In his later years, Lionel developed a love for sailing and spending time on the water. He was also a Harley-Davidson enthusiast and took several memorable motorcycle trips across North America. He enjoyed fishing, playing his electric guitar, and was a member of First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his former wife, Rebecca Phelps; his children, Lionel Phelps II (Brett) of Owensboro, Joseph Phelps (Felicia) of Evansville, Clinton Phelps of Evansville, Tammi Gregg (Randy) of Evansville, and Julie Nelson of Evansville; along with 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Lionel will be remembered for his independence, craftsmanship, and the love he had for his family.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at Alexander West Chapel, 2100 W. Illinois St. in Evansville, officiated by Pastor Jim Saunders. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
Friends and family may visit from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 13, 2026 and from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.
