Mary L. (Kirtley) Maurer, 93, died peacefully in her home on Wednesday, April 11, 2018. She was born September 15, 1924 to a coal-mining family in Muhlenberg County, KY. Mary was the only girl of seven children. In the forties, she moved to Evansville and went to work for her brother at the Brown Derby night club, where she met her husband, Sol Maurer, who had moved here from New York City. She then worked as a receptionist for Keller Crescent for many years while raising two sons.
Mary was beloved by everyone she met. She loved to throw parties, and kept a pot of coffee on all day for a steady stream of drop-in visitors. Her positivity, fun-loving spirit, and compassion were her best assets. She was young at heart and had friends from all generations. Nothing was more important to Mary than family and friends. She also loved music and brought joy to others with her beautiful singing voice.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Sol Maurer; parents, Claude and Iva (Hope) Kirtley; brothers, Jim, Charles, Gordon, Kenneth, and Claude “Kirt” Kirtley; and her companion of several years, Leo Buttrum.
Mary is survived by her son, Mike (Terri); granddaughters, Nicol Maurer and Shana Brockett; great-granddaughter, Natalie Brockett; son, Mark (Kay Huber); granddaughter, Elizabeth Maurer; brother, Bill Kirtley; and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank Kindred Hospice and many loving caregivers for their help during the final phase of Mary's life.
Visitation was held at Alexander East Chapel, 2115 Lincoln Avenue, at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 21, with a Sharing of Memories to follow at 3:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, please make any desired donations to the Vanderburgh Humane Society.
