Mary Virginia Thompson, 100, of Evansville, passed away at her daughter's home on Tuesday, December 23, 2014, after a brief illness. She was born January 31, 1914, in Evansville, to the late Gregory and Katherine (Anty) Hayden.
She attended Assumption Grade School and graduated from Central High School in 1932. While in high school she worked part time at the Victory and the Royal movie theaters. Happily married, she helped run their forty acre farm near St. Joe, Indiana and worked for several years at S.S. & S. Furniture Company on North Main Street in Evansville. A devout Catholic, she later worked keeping house for the priests in her home parish of St. Joseph’s as well as Holy Redeemer for many years.
Virginia was a faithful member of Tops (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) for over thirty years watching her diet and walking every day. On her 100th birthday last January she took her first helicopter flight in Palm Springs, CA. Ever active, even at 100 years of age, she could be seen picking up twigs and leaves from the yard every day. Her favorite endeavors were playing cards, taking care of the cats, and babysitting her great-great-granddaughter, Zoe.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Gilbert E. Thompson; niece, Patricia Erwin; grandson, Stevie Heidt; and granddaughter, Julie Marie Curtis.
She is survived by her son, Dr. David Thompson, and daughter-in-law, Diane Thompson, of Rancho Mirage, CA; daughter, Nancy Heidt, and son-in-law, Steve Heidt, of Evansville; nephew, Kenneth Lutz of Evansville; nieces, Judith Comer of Huntington, WV, Jane Webster, Carolyn Pearce and Marilyn Hammond of Evansville; grandsons, Tom Heidt of Buckskin, IN and Scott Heidt of Evansville; granddaughters, Laura Peach of Haubstadt, Cathy Thompson of Bishop, CA, Nina Williams Blumberg of Solana Beach, CA, and Debra Harding of Encinitas, CA; 16 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be 10:00 AM Saturday, December 27, 2014, at St. James Catholic Church, 12394 South 40 West, Haubstadt, officiated by Fr. Kenneth Betz, with burial in St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery. Friends may visit Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM, with a Rosary service at 7:00 PM, at Alexander North Chapel, 4200 Stringtown Road, Evansville, and Saturday from 9:00 AM until service time at the church.
