Monte Richard Potter, 89, of Evansville, peacefully completed his journey through this life and entered his heavenly home on Monday, February 8, 2016, at Newburgh Health Care. He was born August 14, 1926, in Newby, OK, to the late Lee and Bertha (Mallahan) Potter.
A devoted family man, Monte was known as a kind, compassionate, giving person who loved the Lord. He had a tireless work ethic, was generous to friends and strangers alike, and often did without in order to help others. Monte was the model of a strong yet gentle Christian man and was a blessing to friends, family, God’s creatures, and everyone he met. He proudly served his country for seven years in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. His tours of duty included service as an air spotter off the southern coast of the U.S. and as an aviation electrician’s mate on the U.S.S. Princeton. He was stationed with the Fighting Squadron Fourteen Able, Fighting Squadron 133, and Helicopter Squadron One, among others. A year after his honorable discharge from the Navy Monte met Helen Tucker in Evansville and it was love at first sight. He adored Helen every day of their 56-year marriage and missed her deeply since her passing in 2013. Monte was a lab technician for 34 years until his retirement from Potter & Brumfield / Siemen’s in Princeton. He was also a jack of all trades who could fix anything mechanical, and often gave his time and talent to help others in need. A highlight of Monte’s golden years was his participation in the May 2015 Honor Flight of Southern Indiana to Washington, D.C., with his daughter Nan. Monte was proud to be among the U.S. veterans honored by the journey to our nation’s capital and was deeply touched by the recognition and accolades.
Loved ones who welcomed Monte to his heavenly home, in addition to his parents and his wife, Helen, include his brothers, Donald and Marion; and his sister, Maureen.
Family members who will miss Monte dearly include his son, Richard Potter; daughter, Nan Potter; Pam Kirk, whom he considered his “second daughter,” all of Evansville; brothers, Kenneth and Phillip Potter, both of Oklahoma.
Funeral services will be 12:00 PM Friday, February 12, 2016, at Alexander East Chapel, officiated by Tim Hughes and J.T. Price, with burial in Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may visit Friday from 10:00 AM until service time at the funeral home.
The family would like to thank Senior Helpers of Evansville, especially Heristine Adams, a devoted caregiver and special friend in Christ, the staff at Newburgh Health Care, and Cathy Nossett of Gentiva Hospice.
