Myrtle lived on the outer banks at Cape Hatteras where her father and grandfather were lighthouse keepers. After being orphaned as a teenager, she lived with her sister in several lighthouses on Chesapeake Bay. While living in Florida, she met William “Bill” Hargett and was married in 1934 in St. Petersburg, Florida. During this marriage of 72 years, they had three sons, Wayne, Ronald and Dennis.
Myrtle is the longest living member of Westwood General Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill;” sons, Ronald and Dennis; and grandson, Calvin Hargett.
Myrtle is survived by her son, Wayne (Dottie) Hargett; and daughter-in-laws, Carol and Janie Hargett.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday, January 4, 2017, at Alexander West Chapel, officiated by Pastor John Sloan, burial in Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit Wednesday from 11:00 AM until service time at the funeral home.
