Dr. Paul “Louie” Louis Winternheimer, 80, of Carmel, IN, a lifelong resident of Evansville, passed away Thursday, April 14, 2011, at St. Vincent Hospital. He was born February 9, 1931, in Evansville to Walter and Hulda Winternheimer.
He attended Bosse High School where he met his life’s love, Dorothy (Meyers), to whom he was married for nearly 60 years. He attended Purdue University where he majored in Biology and then received his Master’s from University of Iowa and his Doctorate from Indiana University. In 1957, he joined the faculty of Evansville College (now University of Evansville) where he was a distinguished Biology professor for 39 years. His students were his life. He taught Microbiology and Bacteriology to all of the Nursing and Pre-Med students along with Botany and Taxonomy classes which included field trips to the Smokey and Rocky Mountains. He was an adviser to Pre-Physical Therapy students in his later years and enjoyed living and teaching in England at Harlaxton College for a semester in the 1970’s.
Paul received the first “Teacher of the Year” award at the University of Evansville and also was one of the first professors to speak at the “Last Lecture Series” at the University. He was on numerous committees at the University and headed the Commencement Exercises. Other accomplishments included being the President of the Wesselman Park Nature Society board for which he wrote a Plant Identification Guide.
He was an avid fly fisherman and made others frustrated by his ability to catch the first, biggest, and most fish almost every outing. He had a “green” thumb and could identify most every plant by common and scientific name if you went on a hike with him.
All who knew him understood his love for his wife, family and his grandchildren. He had lots of stories he liked to tell and made a special effort to help those around him. He enjoyed wood working and had about every tool you could need.
Paul was confirmed in Bethel United Church of Christ and later attended Christian Fellowship Church. His personal faith guided his love for and service to others and we have all benefitted from his example.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth.
Paul is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Meyers); son, Louis Winternheimer (Lisa); daughter, Amy Scott (Chris); sister, Ethel Temme (Lowell); sister-in-law, Doris Winternheimer; and six grandchildren.
