Russell grew up in Howell during the depression, which taught him many life lessons he kept with him. He attended Daniel Wertz Elementary School, Reitz High School, and Mechanic Arts. While in the Boy Scouts, he learned Morse code, which he later used while serving in the Navy as a radioman in WWII and the Korean War. Russell communicated with people worldwide and continued to use this skill until as recently as last week.
He worked as a sheet metal worker for many years, retiring in 1978. His hobbies included boating on the Ohio River, fishing, hunting, playing pool, water skiing which he did even at age 61, and horseback riding which he did up to the age of 88. Russell had many adventures traveling and camping including a trip to Alaska, a 25th anniversary trip to Hawaii, and a 12 day journey through the Canadian Rockies on horseback. Thanks to his son Steve, he was able to continue camping with his Pretty Girl Jo (his dog) until his late 90’s.
He and his first wife, Sue (Shelton) Bryant, planned and built their retirement dream home on Lake Barkley. Here many years of treasured memories were shared by the family. In later years, he rekindled his interest in horses while living in Kuttawa and Lamasco, KY, and in Lynnville, IN.
Russell was a member of Reed Lodge #316 in Evansville and served as Master of Joppa Lodge #167 in Eddyville, KY. He received his 75 year pin in 2020. Russell was honored in Lynnville by having his name put on a brick in their veteran’s memorial. In 2014, he was escorted by his two grandsons on the Honor Flight to Washington, DC. He was a member of the Sword of Bunker Hill. Russell had attended Howell Methodist Church.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Ramon (RL) Bryant, his grandson Zachary Lear, and great granddaughter Nikole Bryant.
He is survived by his son; Steve (Sharon) Bryant; daughters, Nancy Clark and Judy (Bob) Lear; grandchildren, Stacy Lane, Sherry (Brian) Gammon, Scott Qualls, Chad (Kristi) Qualls, Ashley (Chris) Seaton; great grandchildren, Cody (Victoria) Bryant, Austin, Matthew, and Samatha Lane, Jack and Amber Gammon, Evan, Kate, Dylan, and Jillian Qualls, Zoey and Hudson Seaton; and great-great grandchildren, Oliver Bryant and Sadie Lynn Gammon. He was truly blessed to be surrounded by so much unconditional love.
