

Ruth Gladys Martin, 97, of Mt. Vernon, IN passed away peacefully at home, Thursday, May 1, 2025 surrounded by her family. She was born on October 9, 1927 in Evansville, IN to the late Edward D. Grossman and Ella C. (Martin) Grossman.
Ruth graduated from Reitz High School class of 1945. She was named one of the outstanding early education teachers in the nation by Trendex, Inc. in 1968, a national research organization, for “Grade Teacher” – a publication for elementary school teachers. She was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening, was an active church member, and a long-time IU Football fan.
Ruth attended the University of Evansville where she received her BS degree in 1949, and she received her MS from Indiana University. She came from a family of teachers, including her father, three uncles, several aunts, and cousins. Her son Duane, daughter Janet, and son-in-law Tim carried on her legacy as teachers. Her husband was an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Evansville. Mrs. Martin taught in Evansville for 10 years, then went to Marrs Elementary School, where she taught Kindergarten for the next 30 years. She was active in many educational organizations, such as, Classroom Teachers Association, National Education Association, Indiana Teachers Association, and a charter member of Sigma Alpha Iota National Music Fraternity for Women. Ruth was a church organist for 75+ years; also a Sunday School teacher at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Robert F. Martin in 2014; parents, Edward and Ella Grossman; and brother, Harold Grossman.
Ruth is survived by her son, Duane E. Martin; daughter, Janet L. Weisling (Tim); grandchildren, Nathaniel R. Weisling (fiancé, Stephanie), Noah J. Weisling (girlfriend, Nicole); numerous nieces and nephews; and the beloved cat, Izzy.
Ruth's family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to Heart to Heart Hospice for their love and care of Mom.
Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Youth Home, or St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 5, 2025 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 5301 S. St. Philips Rd., Evansville, IN officiated by Pastor Dennis Wathen followed by burial at St. Paul’s United Methodist Cemetery.
Friends and family may visit on Sunday, May 4, 2025 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Alexander West Chapel, 2100 W, Illinois Street, Evansville, IN and on Monday, May 5, 2025 at the church from 9:00 a.m. until service time.
