Ruth (Eilert) Nichol

She moved to Evansville with her family following the 1937 flood. She attended Wheeler Grade School and graduated from Central High School in 1944. Ruth was active in reunion planning for the class of 1944 until her passing. She attended Evansville College, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority, graduating in 1948. After graduating from Evansville College, Ruth was a social worker at the Indiana Department of Public Welfare. She later earned her Master’s degree in Education and Guidance from Indiana University. In 1955, Ruth began a teaching career that spanned 37 years. All 37 years were spent teaching at Scott Elementary School, where she taught several generations of Scott Township area families. She was an avid reader and supporter of the Evansville Public Library System.

Ruth was a member of Methodist Temple, where she was active in the Miriam Circle and other church ministries, such as the food bank and soup kitchen. She was also a member of the Evansville Kennel Club; Evansville Country Club; Evansville Retired Teachers Association, doing volunteer work within the community; and the Evansville Kiwanis. She was also a volunteer at St. Mary’s Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George P. Nichol; and daughter, Nancy (Nichol) Hinkebein.

Ruth is survived by her children, Peggy (Andy) Dudley, Sally Kivett, and George “Pete” Nichol; grandchildren, Jennifer (Jason) Gindling, Amy (Blake) O’Mara, Sarah (Neil) Mulrooney, Lewis (Maris) Kivett, and Casey Hinkebein; and great-grandchildren, Bennett Mulrooney, Nora and Rylee O’Mara, Jack and Kaeli Gindling.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 AM Thursday, March 10, 2016, at Alexander East Chapel, officiated by Rev. Andy Payton, with burial in Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may visit Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
