

Sandra Duvall West, 70, of Evansville, passed away Sunday, December 8, 2013, at Deaconess Hospice. She was born April 22, 1943, in Madisonville, KY to the late Cecil Ernest and Mary Lucille (Morgan) Duvall.
She was a graduate of Madisonville High School in 1961 and graduated from Owensboro School of Practical Nursing in 1964 with a LPN degree. She worked at the Hopkins Co. Hospital in Pediatrics, Intensive Care and Medical Floors. She also worked at the Western Kentucky State Tuberculosis Hospital. She was active in Kentucky Republican politics and was President of the Hopkins Co. Republican Women’s Club. She was also one of two full delegates to the 1972 Republican National Convention from the First Congressional District of Kentucky.
She fought hard to save the Outwood State Facility for Mentally Retarded people in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Outwood, now operated by Res-Care, is located in Dawson Springs, KY, and is still in operation today.
Sandra married her husband, Dr. William G. West, Jr., on December 29, 1966. She and William and their 3-year-old daughter, Sarah, later moved to Evansville in 1976 where Sandra worked part-time in several doctor’s offices, including Dr. West’s Newburgh office. By the late 1980’s, she worked full-time in the Newburgh office and in 1998, she and Dr. West retired. She later worked four years at Mid-West Ear, Nose and Throat in the Evansville, Vincennes, Jasper, Huntingburg and Oakland City branches.
Sandra is preceded in death by her parents, Cecil Ernest and Mary Lucille (Morgan) Duvall of Madisonville, KY; sister, Cecilia Duvall McKnight of St. Charles, KY; brother, Michael Duvall of Sacramento, KY.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Dr. William G. West, Jr of Evansville, IN; daughter, Sarah Margaret Wilkerson of Evansville, IN; granddaughter, Sloane Cordelia Estes of Evansville, IN; son, William Richard Steiner of Redding, CA; sister, Nancy Duvall Clayton of Madisonville, KY; and brother, Patrick Duvall of Evansville, IN.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
