
Dr. Shirley G. Price, 100, died on May 14, 2923 at Heritage Center, Evansville, Indiana. She was born in 1922 in Springfield, Vermont and was a graduate of Springfield, Vermont High School. In 1940 she earned her B.S. degree from the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont and graduated from the University of Vermont College of Medicine with a MD Degree in 1946. The following two years, she interned in medicine at Hartford Hospital and then served as a resident in surgery for another two years. In 1949, she was employed by Dr. Mel Welborn and moved to Evansville, Indiana, where she was a surgeon at Welborn Clinic and in private practice until her retirement in 1987. Dr. Price was an able pioneer during an era when practicing medicine, particularly surgery, was difficult for women, and she played a vital link in the development of Welborn Clinic.
Shirley’s love of horses continued throughout her life. She owned and showed American Saddlebreds and Morgans and received numerous awards and trophies at horse shows throughout the region. Her hobbies also included adding intricate embroidery to her casual clothing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Sadie and William Price of Springfield, Vermont and five siblings. She is survived by her niece, Elaine Delozier (James) of Silver Spring, Maryland; and nephew, William Carrigan of Shepherdstown, West Virginia.
Burial will be private in Oakland Cemetery, Springfield, Vermont.
