He was a lifetime resident of the Evansville area and 1969 graduate of Central High School. Stephen attended the University of Evansville for a short time on a music education scholarship. His instrument, saxophone, was a Selmer Mark VI which was the same model that his “hero” Bootz Randolph (Evansville’s son) played.
His heart was truly in helping people. After much discussion he attended the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and was sworn in as Deputy Sherriff in Warrick County in July 1975. This was his proudest moment and he served his community for six years. The remainder of his career was spent at Alcoa working in Emergency Response and Safety as an Industrial Firefighter and EMT. He retired after 32 years in 2012.
Stephen was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Doris (Shirley) Walker.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Alice Walker; “his boys” Richard Fletcher (Shelia) and Ryan Fletcher; sister, Rebecca Suzanne (Seth); grandchildren, Danielle Meyer (Brad), Kaleigh Fletcher (Larry Joe Brackin-Masner), Kortland Fletcher, Kyhlar Fletcher, Camren Fletcher, Aubri Fletcher; great grandchild, LJ Brackin-Masner Jr.; and his fellow conspirator and problem solver, Brandi Knight.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Stephen’s 70th birthday, December 7, 2021, at Olivet Community Church at 1:00 P.M., officiated by Pastor Dave Mills. Friends and family may visit 11:00 A.M-1:00 P.M at the church.
The family would like to recognize and thank the Scott Township Fire Department and EMS for their hard work and compassion during the many trips made to their home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Scott Township Fire Department and EMS.
