Tim graduated from Reitz High School in 1976 and attended the Interlochen Arts Academy during his high school years. He continued his music studies at Indiana University and Ball State University, where he received a Bachelor of Music Degree in trumpet performance. Tim’s performance experience on trumpet was extensive, including a five-year tour with the Las Vegas based Russ Morgan Orchestra. Tim performed with some of the top names in the industry… The Supremes, The Temptations, Wayne Newton, Bob Hope, Rosemary Clooney, Liza Minnelli, Natalie Cole, and Doc Severinson.
After touring across the country, Tim returned home becoming a full-time private instructor, clinician, and free-lance performer in the Evansville area. His private students went on to serve others as professional musicians, educators, physicians, and attorneys. He was a member of the Evansville Philharmonic orchestra, the Key West Symphony, Filet of Soul and was a founding member of the Evansville Brass Quintet and Zynergy Big Band. Tim was principal trumpet of the Evansville Symphonic Band for more than 20 years.
Tim was preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived by his long-time partner, Angela Gore; brother, Dr. David B. Smith and wife Sarah R. Smith; and two nephews, Zachary W. Smith and fiancé Caitlin Mauldin of St. Johns, FL and Luke A. Smith and fiancé Madison Dora of Evansville.
Tim had a special bond with the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra - as a performer for 28 years, and 15 years as their Personnel Manager and Librarian. He not only loved performing, but he also loved riding one of his Harleys. It was quite a sight to see him going to a gig - riding his Harley, in a tux, with his trumpet strapped on his back. Always a teacher at heart – his words ring so true as his family navigates life without him. “Life goes by fast, and even faster when you get older.”
