Eugene C. Bond, MD, adored long-time family physician and loving family man, was born September 6, 1923 in Norman, OK and passed away with family by his side on August 29, 2011 in Everett, WA. The grandson of a dentist and the son of a physician, Dr. Bond graduated from Norman High School in Oklahoma in 1941 and went on to finish his pre-medicine studies at Oklahoma University where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta. It was there that he met his wife, Christine Taylor, whom he married in 1946. He served as a corpsman in the US Army during WWII, graduated from Oklahoma University School of Medicine in 1948, served his internship in 1949, and practiced medicine in Fairfax, OK from 1949-53. Dr. Bond then served as a flight surgeon in the US Air Force during the Korean War from 1953-55. He returned to Oklahoma City to complete general surgery residency from 1955-58. In 1958, he moved to Everett, WA where Dr. Bond was a member of the Providence Hospital Medical Center staff, serving as President from 1982-1985. He was known for treating his patients like family, never turning anyone away, and was referred to as an advisor, physician, and counselor. There were times where he had two office staffs and ran the office 16 hours a day to serve the needs of his patients. Dr. Bond was a family doctor and surgeon for over 50 years, delivering over 5,000 babies and treating patients spanning three generations. He was a member of the Snohomish County Medical Society, Washington State Medical Association, American Medical Association, First Presbyterian Church of Everett, and Everett Golf and Country Club. He was a sports enthusiast who played sports throughout school, enjoyed tennis and golf in adulthood, attended almost every Husky football home game, and volunteered as a physician-in-attendance of Everett and Cascade high school football games for over 40 years. He also enjoyed travel, gardening, cooking, sailing, fishing, the symphony, plays at the Village Theatre in Everett, crooners like Sinatra, and attending medical meetings at the hospital every Monday. But most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. On several occasions he said, “If I could do it all over again, I would do it over exactly the same way.”
Dr. Bond is survived by his children, Lynn Smith of Kirkland, Leslie Iles of Everett, Dr. Jeffrey Bond of West Seattle, grandchildren Eric Iles of West Seattle, Sarah White of Portland, OR, Erika Bond of West Seattle, and sister Irene Cook of Norman, OK. A celebration of Dr. Bond’s life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011 at 2PM at First Presbyterian Church, 2936 Rockefeller Ave., Everett. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Everett.
