He was a native of Whitesburg, KY and moved to Louisville in 1952. In 1959, he moved the family to Fairdale, KY, where he resided until his death. He was a U.S Navy veteran of World War II, a sewing machine repairman, and later a barber. While working in the YMCA Barber Shop in the 1950s, he became the first barber in Louisville to cut a flat top hair cut. A few years later, he established and owned Joe's Barber Shop and later changed it to Roffler of Louisville in 1969.
After extensive training to learn how to do the Roffler Sculpture Cut, give perms, dye hair and fit toupees, he reinvented his business and became the first barber in Louisville to go on appointments only. He won the award of Hair Stylist of the Year in 1971.
He was a gifted poet, songwriter, storyteller, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and best of all, a Christian where he served the Lord as a member of Grace Community Baptist Church.
