

He was predeceased by Claire R. Bartlett, his loving wife of 67 years and survived by his children Judith C. Bartlett, Arthur J. Bartlett and Cindy Stoll, Dr. Jon A. Bartlett and wife Linda, and Janet L. Fones. Grandchildren include John L. Fones III and wife Jenna, Nicole L. Fones and John A. Bartlett. He is also survived by nieces Gwen Piercy and Nancy Schultz and nephew Scott Bartlett and wife Becky.
Jack was born in Jersey City , N.J., the first of two sons to Clara L. and Albert F. Bartlett. He earned an undergraduate degree from the College of New Jersey in Trenton and Masters Degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Rutgers University. He also graduated from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.
During WW II, Captain Bartlett commanded U.S. Navy minesweepers in the Atlantic and Pacific. Following the war, Jack taught in the Jersey City Public School System until he was recalled to active duty in 1950. It was during the Korean War that Jack made the decision to pursue a "career " in the U.S. Navy. This life changing decision led "Capt. Jack" to an illustrious and much decorated career that spanned three decades. As a Line officer in the Navy, he had multiple command assignments including: Executive Officer on the USS Smalley (DD-565), Commanding Officer of the USS Remey (DD-686) and the USS Sylvania (AFS-2). He served as the Chief of Staff Officer of Amphibious Squadron Eight during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. He then served as the Administrative Officer, U.S. Naval Weapons Plant in Washington, D.C. Following these assignments, Jack was the Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans, Atlantic Fleet Amphibious Force. As a result of his stellar Naval record and performance, he was selected to receive a "Major Command" as the Commander Service Squadron Six/ComServForce, US Sixth Fleet based in Naples, Italy and honored with the prestigious "War Time" rank of Commadore.
Captain Bartlett's decorations over the course of his career include: the Legion of Merit (Twice), the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Unit Commendation and numerous "Campaign" Medals.
After retiring from the U.S. Navy in 1974, Jack worked as a Project Manager for the S.E.A. Corp. for several years and then officially retired. Jack and Claire (his retired Navy wife!), finally settled down in Fairfax, VA. There, he and Claire enjoyed playing golf and bridge with friends, travelling and spending time with family. One of his favorite hobbies was building model airplanes. Jack was a member of Masonic Lodge #93, F. & A.M. and a member of the American Legion, Post 177. He and Claire were members of St. Matthew's United Methodist Church in Annandale, VA.
"Captain Jack" was a patriot, loyal to family and friends and especially proud to have had the opportunity to serve the United States of America. His legacy will live on and he will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend and "HERO".
