

Captain Albert “Al" Harris Kroening Jr. died peacefully at his home on January 12, 2024 in Fairfax, Virginia, at the age of 89. He was surrounded by many members of his family who loved and cherished him deeply.
Al is survived by his daughters, Kimberly Spina (Leonard), Christine Kroening, Laurie Newman; son, Albert Kroening lll; 7 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert Kroening and Selma Baum Kroening; wife, Virginia “Ginnie” Kroening and sister, Carol Kroening.
Al was born on January 21, 1934 in Oak Park, Illinois to Albert and Selma. He graduated from Valparaiso in 1951. While at Valpo, Al met his college sweetheart, Ginnie, and were married on November 10, 1956. Their union was blessed them with three daughters and a son. The family lived in California, New Jersey, Illinois and Pennsylvania before coming to Northern Virginia. After spending time in Quantico Virginia, as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps, Al spent the remainder his career as an Investment Officer. In 1977, the family joined St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. As years went on he became a respected member of his community, and a beloved grandfather, great grand father “Big G” and a great great grandfather.
He will be remembered for his generosity to his family and neighborhood friends, including the kids that knew him for his full size candy bars on Halloween and the many charities he gave to faithfully. He was a dedicated and proud man, of not only his family, but his country, the Marine Corps and the Green Bay Packers. On any given day you could find him putting his American flag out, reading the newspaper, watching Blue Bloods, making his Costco runs, or chatting with friends and family about current news or politics. Always protective and curious, and usually described as grumpy yet loving. He will forever be greatly loved by his family and friends.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, January 24, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Demaine Fairfax Funeral Home, 10565 Main St, Fairfax, Virginia 22030. A funeral service will occur Thursday, January 25, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Semper Fidelis Memorial Chapel, 1701 Semper Fidelis Way, Triangle, VA. A graveside service will occur Thursday, January 25, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, Virginia. The service will be officiated by Pastor Mark Shaltanis of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Al’s life. Reception to follow graveside service at his home in Fairfax, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Toys for Tots.
