Dan was born on December 5, 1954 in Washington DC to the late Warren H. Phelps and Julia Hancock Phelps. He grew up in Falls Church and entered the Marine Corps shortly after graduating from George Mason Jr. Sr. High School. Returning from his military service, he continued working at Safeway where he retired after 30 years. He then formed his own home repair and contracting business where he worked for the next 20 plus years.
Dan was known for his hard work, kindness and willingness to help others in need. Over the years he and Pat volunteered at nursing homes and animal rescue groups, most recently Mutt Love Rescue in Fairfax, Virginia. Throughout their 47-year marriage, they welcomed many dogs, especially those most in need because of age or health issues. Recently, two feral cats were added to the mix.
Dan is survived by his wife, Patricia Rollyson Phelps, his brother Timothy H. Phelps (Kara), his dogs, BG, Joe and Minnie and the kitties, Krissy and Sylvester. Dan was the brother of the late Melanie Wickersham and Karen Davis. Dan also leaves to mourn his extended family, friends and neighbors – loved by all.
Pat would like to express her gratitude to Capital Caring Hospice, family, friends and neighbors, and especially their neighbor and good friend, Jessica Burns, who stayed by Dan’s side many days and nights.
