

James “Jim” Robert Lowery, Jr., age 69, of Fairfax, VA, passed away March 8, 2017 at Dutch Haven Assisted Living facility in Maurertown, VA. Jim was born July 28, 1947 in Winchester, VA. He spent his childhood in Alexandria, VA graduating from Edison High School in 1966. He was inducted into the US Army during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1972, after which, he joined Fairfax County Government as a building inspector. Throughout his career he held various positions with the Plans and Zoning Department of Fairfax County. Following his retirement in 2000, he formed The Lowery Group, providing consulting services to the construction industry in Northern Virginia. During Jim’s career he was President of the Virginia Building Code Officials Association from 1991 – 1992. He received the Meritorious Service Award for Building Officials from VBOCA in 1995 and he was a member of the International Code Council that created the International Building Codes. He served as the primary Building Official for the Towns of Haymarket and Occoquan Virginia before formally retiring in 2015 when his Parkinson’s disease prevented him from continuing to do the job he loved. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Sr. and Ethel Lowery. He is survived by his spouse, Karen A. Lowery of Manassas, VA and children Karley Anne-Marie Lowery and Jennifer Margie-Louise Lowery; former spouse Paula Lowery of Woodbridge, VA and children Kristen Coleen Piper of Woodbridge, VA; Kari Ann Lowery of Chantilly, VA; Kendra Lynn Lowery of Chantilly, VA; Harold Randall Lowery of Urbana, IL; his grand children, Emma Elizabeth Piper, Megan Grace Piper, Carys Amryn Pearl Lowery, Gabriel Jamison Lowery, Ava Marie Lowery, new baby Lowery and sisters, Sharon L. Hines of Claudville, VA and Cindy K. Ledford of Manassas, VA. The family will receive friends for a Celebration of Jim’s Life at Demaine Funeral Home, 10565 Main Street, Fairfax, VA on March 31, 2017 from 6 – 8 PM. A private gravesite ceremony will be held at Mount Comfort Cemetery in Alexandria, VA.
