It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of John Mason Jr., 61. John was a beloved son, husband, brother and uncle. He passed unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, leaving behind a devoted family.
Born April 26, 1964 at Fort Knox, KY, John spent his early years traveling as an Army officer’s son, living in Arlington, VA, West Point, NY, and Germany. John’s family settled in the City of Fairfax, VA. Upon graduating from Fairfax High School, John entered the US Army, where he became an Airborne Ranger. Upon leaving the army, John returned to Fairfax, VA, where he remained until his passing.
In 2005, John fell in love and eventually married his wife, Karen. For 20 years their relationship weathered the ups and downs of life. Along the way, they adopted 5 rescue dogs and traveled to lots of places.
John had a successful career in Transportation Tolling. John spent the last several years working for The Virginia Department of Transportation as a Tolls Systems Manager. John’s empathy, leadership, and integrity left a lasting impression on his colleagues and industry peers.
In addition to John’s professional life, he equally loved traveling and being a home body. John, along with his wife, traveled to many places, including Bonaire, Italy, Ireland, and Iceland. As soon as they returned home, they would dream of their next adventure. When at home, John enjoyed tinkering around the house on DIY projects, often starting a new project before finishing the last. He also loved snuggling with his dogs and spending time with his family.
John is survived by his wife, Karen, mother, Jeanette, sister Joana, brother Jeffery, niece Kimberly, nephews Nicolas, Logan, and Charles, as well as his dog’s Nipsey and Topper. John was preceded in death by his father John Sr.
Fitting with John’s spirit, a celebration of John’s life will be held at P.J. Skidoos in Fairfax, VA on May 16, 2025 from 5PM until 9 PM EDT. All that were touched by John’s life are encouraged to attend and share their fond memories of John.
Words do not properly describe how much John touched our lives or how deeply he will be missed.
