

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Marilyn Smoak Sommer, in the early morning of February 28, 2025, at the age of 86. A beloved mother, grandmother, and dedicated educator, who will be greatly missed. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Marilyn spent the majority of her adult life in Fairfax, Virginia, where she became a cherished member of her community.
Marilyn was a gifted seamstress and educator, known for her exceptional talent and passion for teaching. She inspired countless students with her creativity and dedication, sharing her love for sewing and craftsmanship with all who had the privilege of learning from her. Her nurturing spirit and ability to connect with others made a lasting impact on the lives she touched.
As a devoted mother to Jennifer Chivers and her two sons, Paul D. Sommer and Alan F. Sommer. Marilyn instilled a deep sense of love, resilience, and the importance of pursuing one’s passions. Her grandchildren, Rachel D. Chivers and Ronald D. Chivers, were the pride and joy of her life. She cherished every moment spent with them, creating a treasured trove of memories filled with laughter, love, and the warmth of family.
In her leisure time, Marilyn found joy in reading, often immersing herself in the pages of her favorite books. She also adored her two miniature poodles, who brought her companionship and happiness. Her home was a sanctuary of love, creativity, and warmth, where family and friends were always welcomed with open arms.
Marilyn is survived by her daughter, Jennifer, and her beloved grandchildren, Rachel and Ronald, who will carry her spirit and teachings in their hearts forever.
A intimate family service at Stonewall Memorial Cemetery, 12004 Lee Hwy, Manassas VA 20109 will be held at a later date, where her family and friends will gather to honor her remarkable journey and the love, she shared with all. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Suicide prevention or AIDS research.
Rest in peace, dear Marilyn. Your legacy of love, creativity, and compassion will forever be cherished by all who know you.
