Susan Carol Kaput
July 28, 1944 – April 6, 2026
Susan C. Kaput, born Susan Carol Ashley, passed away peacefully at home on April 6, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, beauty, and humor that touched everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Susan was born on July 28, 1944, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, to Joanne Ashley and William C. Ashley (née Picard). She grew up in Acushnet, spending some of her happiest times fishing with her grandfather or ice skating on Long Pond. As a young adult, Susan studied fine arts and obtained her undergraduate degree from Southeastern Massachusetts Technological Institute (now, UMass Dartmouth).
She was a woman of insatiable curiosity and a drive to help others. Susan loved books, and her home held a large library with a thoughtful collection of books that she was always happy to share. She had a gift for discovering and creating things that brought joy — art (Susan was a talented painter), wooden puzzles, humor, and good music — and a generous impulse to pass those creations and discoveries along to friends and family. No matter what life brought her, she could always find beauty and something to laugh about.
Susan is survived by her son, Noah Kaput, and his wife Heather Kaput; her daughter, Sarah Kessler (née Kaput); and by her beloved sister, Diane Ventura (née Ashley), and Diane’s husband, Ernest Ventura. Susan was a proud grandmother to five grandchildren: Willa and Hazel Kaput, and Arthur James, Harrison Jacob, and Alden Windsor Kessler.
She was preceded in death by her husband, the late James J. Kaput, and her son, Jacob Kaput, both of whom she loved deeply.
Susan will be remembered for her laughter, and her generous spirit — always curious, always sharing, always finding the light.
Her visitation will be Sunday, April 12, 2026 from 2 to 4 p.m. in Waring-Sullivan Home at Fairlawn, 180 Washington St., Fairhaven, MA 02719. Words of remembrance will be shared at 3:30 Sunday, and her graveside service will be Monday at 10 a.m. in South Dartmouth Cemetery, Elm St., Dartmouth. For online tribute: www.waring-sullivan.com.
