
Charles John “Charlie” Etling, Sr., of New Baden, Illinois, born on January 10, 1943 in Belleville, Illinois, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 23, 2016, under the care of the nurses and staff of Breese Hospital and Heartland Hospice.
He fought a brave and courageous one year battle against pancreatic cancer, and in his words, “Just doing what he HAD to do.” He was employed by Mascoutah schools as a custodian for 32 years. He retired early and was recently employed with Adam’s Auction and Real Estate Services an additional 20 years.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Gustav J. and Elsie M., nee Richardson, Etling; two brothers, Orville Etling and Lloyd Etling; his in-laws, Herbert and Emma Dawson; and his best friend and loyal compassion, Tessie.
He is survived and missed by his loving wife, Loretta, nee Dawson, Etling. They were married June 30, 1962 and recently celebrated 54 years of marriage. He is also preceded in death by his two loyal children, Charles J. “Chip” (Melinda) Etling, Jr. of Mascoutah, Illinois and Kristin J. (Daniel) Etling, of Mascoutah, Illinois. Charlie was a proud Papa of six much loved grandchildren, Charles J. “Chas” Etling III, Bryce D. Etling, Maddie S. Chapman, Grace K. Etling, Myles D. Etling, and Trent L. Erdmann; his brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, best friends and co-workers.
