Flora was a very active member of St. Paul UCC in Lebanon, Illinois, she was an avid tennis player and enjoyed golf. She was often seen during her daily walk around town. She graduated from the nursing program at St. Luke’s Hospital in Spokane, Washington and worked for Dr. Emerson Carpenter, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland, Illinois, Home Health Services, and retired from St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville, Illinois where she was the first ostomy nurse.
She embodied the definition of what a kind, caring, intelligent, and professional nurse should be. The type of nurse that God blesses on the sick and the kind anyone would what taking care of them. Patients adored her, doctors respected and trusted her, and coworkers admired and looked up to her. Flora was known as a bit of a “Town Nurse” and was always looking to take care of somebody, family, friends, or strangers. Who she served did not matter to someone who was truly the best at what she did.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Gray, her parents; George W. and Ethelyn, nee Vance, Taber Sr., and a brother, George W. Taber Jr.
Surviving are her children; James (Kathi) Gray of Lebanon, Illinois, Carla (James) Kelley of Lebanon, Illinois, and Ellen (Bob) Nuernberger of Woodbridge, Virginia, her grandchildren; Sean (Sophia) Kelley, Jaime (Darren) Kelley Eads, Jason Gray, Shannon (Jon) Allen, William (Michelle) Taylor, and Emily Taylor, great grandchildren; Riley Sopko, Tyler Sopko, Addison Allen, Kayla Eads, Krista Eads, Nicholas Hall, Sasha Kelley, and Suri Kelley, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
