He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Judy of O'Fallon, IL; his mother, Jewell nee Mann Sparger of Boynton Beach, FL; two brothers, Dennis (Helene) Sparger of Belleville, IL, Gerald (Betty) Sparger of Suwanee, GA, and one sister, Edna (Les) McKinzie of Boynton Beach, FL; a father and mother-in-law, Alvin (Gussie) Tonne of North Richland Hills, TX; a sister-in-law, Cindy (Gary) Steen of Grapevine, TX; brothers-in-law Andy (Betsy) Tonne of Amarillo, TX; and John (Kerry) Tonne of Euless, TX, and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Avealoie O. Sparger and one brother, Robert Sparger.
Russ graduated SIU-E, attended Covenant Seminary and received an honorary PhD, Doctor of Divinity, from World Christianship Ministries. He was a brilliant musician performing for many years as the keyboardist at the Fox Theatre, leading worship at various churches and local PromiseKeepers events, writing songs and blessing many hearers. He had a true heart of worship. One of his many endeavors was to begin a ministry called Night of Praise which hosted local worship nights that would reach across denominational borders uniting hearts in worship to the King.
Russ also loved golf and served as the Assistant Manager of Cardinal Creek Golf Course before his illness precluded him from doing so.
He and Judy were avid travelers with a special place in their hearts for Alaska and Hawaii. They had a fondness for humpback whales and would have adopted one as a pet if their hot tub had been able to house it.
Like anyone who loses a loved one, those who loved Russ felt his leaving was too soon. However, they enjoyed the last 20 years of his life due in part to the gift of life given to him by organ donors. Without that gift this article would have published many years earlier. He was grateful for that gift on a daily basis. Russ was diagnosed with Type I diabetes as a child and endured many complications of the disease, but still led a full life giving of himself to many. He will be missed.
