

Terry E. Hoefle, affectionately known as T-Bone to his family and friends, and Poppy to his grandchildren, passed away peacefully at the age of 77 on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Saint Louis University Hospital. He was known for having a larger-than-life presence and a talent for making others smile. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, compassion, and deep devotion to the people he loved. He is remembered as an adored husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
Terry was born on June 25, 1948, in East St. Louis, Illinois, and spent his formative years in nearby Belleville, Illinois. In 1968, Terry enlisted in the United States Air Force Reserve and was assigned to the 52nd Medical Services Squadron, where he served in airlift operations as a Medical Services Specialist. He received an honorable discharge in January 1974 at the rank of Staff Sergeant. He then completed his degree, graduating from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and began a career in the insurance industry. Terry owned Steck-Cooper & Company, Inc, an independent insurance agency. He served as board member and President of ARM of Illinois and was a charter member of the Swansea Rotary Club.
After retiring, travel became one of the great joys in Terry’s life, visiting Alaska, Europe, and the Caribbean. He particularly loved trips to Disney World and to the beach with his family. As soon as one family vacation ended, he was planning for the next one. He loved having more time available to spend with his wife, children, his grandchildren, and his friends.
Terry loved fishing of all kinds, fly fishing for trout in particular. He was also a sports enthusiast with a passion for playing soccer, tennis, and pickleball. He was a fan of NASCAR, the Saint Louis Cardinals, and Alabama Football. He also loved the sideline, cheering for his grandkids in their games and matches.
He enjoyed adventures and celebrations with his friends and family, truly living life to the fullest.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wilson O. Hoefle; his mother, Alice R. (Warner) Hoefle; his brother, Wilson “Duke” C. Hoefle; his father-in-law, Benjamin “Aubrey” Hickman; and his mother-in-law, Mary “Elois” Hickman.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Janet; his son, Matt (Stacey) Hoefle; his daughter, Christy (Dan) Burton; his beloved grandchildren, Reagen, Loren, Kassidy, and Gus; his sister, Claudette/Claud (Frank) Graetz; his brother-in-law, Wayne Hickman; his nephews and niece along with their families, Thomas/TJ (Jessica) Graetz, Michael (Anna) Graetz, and Kelly (Tony) Maher.
Terry will be laid to rest at a private service with his family.
A celebration of life will be held for friends and family who wish to gather in remembrance of Terry on Saturday, February 28, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus, 402 E US Highway 50, O’Fallon, Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites those who wish to honor Terry’s memory to make a donation to an organization of their choosing.
